I don't think Marquez had a bad chin. Hell, he was never once stopped in over 60 fights. I think the reason he got dropped a few times in fights was because he was not a safety first fighter. Much like Joe Louis and Felix Trinidad, he would often risk getting in harm's way to be able to land his own damaging blows. It made for some very exciting fights.
As I said it's a controversial one because as you pointed out, Juan Manuel Marquez has never been stopped. But for me I just think his chin is "ok". Not saying it's bad but in my opinion just ok at best. But as I said earlier the man has amazing heart and will power, as evident in the 1st Pacquiao fight to continue on after 3 knockdowns and a broken nose. So even if his chin is not granite he can overcome that in other areas. I actually don't think Fury's chin is amazing either, and I know that sounds crazy also. But forgetting the Wilder fights, he has been floored and hurt by a non puncher like Pakjic, and floored by Cruiserweight Cunningham. Again like Marquez I think Fury has alot of willpower and heart to get up, like he did vs Wilder in 12th round of their first fight.
Not sure if you class Tyson Fury as an ATG but his chin is vulnerable.. his powers of recover are epic however. He’s been on the receiving end of 6 knockdowns but hasn’t lost.
I agree for me Tyson Fury's chin is also vulnerable, but like you his heart and will and recovery powers overcome that, that's the argument I was also making for Juan Manuel Marquez earlier.
I was going to say him myself Fergy, but I remember I brought his chin up awhile ago. And a few posters claimed to me it was more to do with balance issues ? And I didn't want to go into that debate again in all honesty haha. But I'm sorry I disagree with those comments, he went down 20 odd times in his career. Balance or no balance his chin certainly isn't his strongest aspect, as much I love Patterson. I think he falls into the argument of what I said about Juan Manuel Marquez earlier.
Personally don’t think so when most of his knockdowns were from one of the hardest hitters in history.
No worries mate. Even getting knocked down as many times as he did, doesn't make him any less of a great fighter for me. Yes he was down numerous times but in a few of those he actually got up to win.
came here to say this. has such a solid resume even following the Liston losses. Hes for sure an ATG imo.
Can't name many guys who got knocked down as much as Patterson and still won or at least went the distance. Patterson ate beatings from several hard hitting fighters, just caused he's floored doesn't mean he's always hurt, hes one of my favorite fighters but the balance arguments are absurd. It's just likely Patterson was liable to get caught on the way in often and could be floored easier than other fighters. He was a lighter guy in a heavy division. it is what it is.
True, but he was dropped heavily by Bonavena 2x (he was green so he gets a pass) & was hurt by Mathis (who was not a bigger puncher) in the 6th round. He had a decent/fair chin but it wasn't one of the best - as the title preludes.
