Jerry Quarry v Oscar Bonavena

It depends.

Bonavena defeated Chuvalo and Chuvalo defeated Jerry, but we all know boxing is not an exact science. Styles makes fights.

If Jerry decides to box then he has the advantage with his counterpunching, hand speed and footwork. But again, if Jerry goes "wild irish" mode then it is a gruelling slugfest and Ringo has a good chance to come on top.

 

Me and Futch had Bonavena almost beat Ali. Quarry wasn’t on that level. Poor Quarry.

 

Of course he tried to adjust to his opponents. Most boxers do. Thing is, there aren't many styles he could adopt to be considered a favorite against Quarry who is the better technician, the more educated fighter, and a lethal counterpuncher hell bent on deconstructing and exposing any puncher that comes his way.

Hence why I consider him using his bullish strength to force the bout to be fought on his terms one of the only reasonable strategies.

 

That's true. If he fight like he did against Frazier then Jerry's gonna love it.

anybody with two left feet and come to counterpunching Jerry Quarry are either in for a short (Shavers KO 1) OR LONG (LYLE W 12) Evening.

Oscar Bonavena never knocked out a then top ten opponent, he lacked the polish to beat Quarry at his best.

Oscar was 4-7-1 zero KO'S VS TOP TEN. Quarry 9-5-1 w 5 knockouts (9-7-1 counting Unranked Chuvalo and exiled Ali 10-26-70)
Chuvalo was ranked right outside top ten 12/12/69
Ali was unranked 10/26/70 coming back from exile.
I would Make Quarry about a 7-5 favorite.

 

I feel Bonavena had the style advantage here. Would have been a heck of a fight and it’s a shame it never happened.

 

Wow never realized Oscar didn’t score any KOs w his power over top ten opponents. He had some awesome wins too. Had to go back and look at that. With wins over Leotis Martin and Folley and Middleton.

 

I didnt realize you had to score a KO in boxing to win a fight? Quarry may have more KOs against top ten guys but he aint knocking out Bonavena and with Quarry's stamina issues there is no guarantee that he outpoints Bonavena. Its a tossup.

 

Willie Pep displayed better footwork walking to his fridge then Bonavena had in his entire career. Oscar isn’t Pep’s corpse, Chuvalo was just terrible.

 

Yea that kinda tells the story , he just wasn't a finisher with the top guys, like Jerry was / could be. 5 KNOCKOUTS AGAINST QUARRY'S COMPETETION IS NOTHING TO SNEEZE AT, AND 9 TOP TEN VCTORIES FEW CHAMPIONS IN ANY DIVISION HAVE THAT MANY OR EVEN FOUGHT THAT MANY.

Oscar victories, Chuvalo, Mildenberger, Martin & Middleton top ten level. And Like Quarry had his name in the WBA No.1 contender spot.

 

That was essentially what I was saying,,, and not that Oscar was an equal to Pep.
