Yeah, Lacy is far-removed from the perceived big threat he was a couple years back. In the fight on Wednesday Lacy threw some serious looking right-hands, but lost steam quickly when Mendoza started whacking him right back. To me it's most likely that Calzaghe put a career ending beating on Lacy. Still, maybe Lacy’s inactivity is part of it? Maybe Mendoza’s better than I thought after Dawson pummeled him? Dunno. The scrap on Wednesday was pretty enjoyable still. Lacy needs to get more active against lower level guys firstly — otherwise he’s just gonna become a punching bag opponent, and will end up another sad boxing story.
I agree activity is the Key. But I think he's had some injuries and overall body fatigue over the past couple of years that have held him back.....these are ofcourse likely the long term result of him litterally getting the **** slapped out of him by Calzaghe.
I think you underestimate the sort of damage that the type of beating he took off calzaghe can do, not so much phsically as mentally. Before the Calzaghe fight he thought he could beat anyone. He was confident and proud and fought like it. Calzaghe slapped those ideas out of his head for good. The bruises from that fight healed long ago but he stilll knows he aint the best out there and that he never will be. For a guy that aspired to be the number one that is tough to swallow. That confidence crushing slapping coupled with the shoulder injury and enforced layoff really hasnt done him any favours. What he needed after his slapping was to get straight back in there and start winning again to rebuild the confidence but that was denied him by his injury. He may well get back to being world class again but he will never regain the aura he had as a young, unbeaten, confident champion.
Lacy was clocked pretty good. If you watch the fight youll notice he was missing his beard on the right side when the fight is over..... In all seriousness he might catch jermain taylor with a shot but besides a punchers chance i think he will lose by a wide margin.
He caught Mendoza plenty of times flush with the right hand with good extension and leverage on them and they did NOTHING. It's amazing but his only remaining asset, which is his power, seems to have disappeared. So he really has no chance against Taylor IMO.
Mendoza is actually a good tough fighter with onl y one loss by lucky punch (Dawson). Lacy has taken a tough series of fights to come back on.
Calzaghe ruined Lacy no doubt. Lacy seems intent on rebuilding himself - but it's going to take a strong showing against a credible opponent to make a believer out of me.
when you take a 1000 (ok i'm exaggerating a little) punches in a fight, even from someone who isn't meant to be a huge puncher it must do some damage, also add the almost certain damage mentally, and i fear the man will never be the same.
