I am curious. I'm in America and cruiserweight has certainly never been big in this country. Is that the case in Europe?
The Super-heavy division exists in all but name. whereas “cruiser” is the wrong word for the men in that division. “Heavyweight” is good enough for the Olympics.
I think the cruiserweight division was on fire a few years ago. Arguably the best and most exciting division in boxing.
I think its a good division and certainly had some great fights and fighters in it, but it's the division right below Heavyweight, therefore the interest and big paydays just aren't there.
It’s a name change. Junior Mega weight Never happened to Olympic boxing. so there’s proof we are safe from that.
Wouldn't it have started with Ali and the 80s? they were all quite some size bigger then original HWs. It's the same logic really.
No. Ali, Foreman and Norton might have weighed a bit more than 200lb but they were roughly not too different to Dempsey, Tunney, Schmeling, Louis, Braddock, Baer so far as height and reach go. it’s when the 6’5” brigade finally started to benefit from modern training, nutrition and a greater understanding of sports science that we saw a new division of men that had previously been unable to dominate before.
