What boxers did Rocky Marciano consciously and deliberately duck, if any?

Carmine was a well thought of prospect at the time and locals knew well of him. I don’t know about the punching part it was early in Marcianos career and at that time maybe Vingo did hit him the hardest he was hit.

Sadly it's hard to find pictures of Vingo where he's not either lying on the canvas or in his hospital bed, but in his wedding picture he looks to be only a few inches taller than his wife. Cathy Vingo was a fairly tall woman - reportedly 5'7" - but if Carmine was really 6'4" he should be towering over her.

Of course we don't know what was going on inside Marciano's mind.

Joe Louis said that the only man he ever really ducked was Melio Bettina, and that one has never to my knowledge generated a thread.

What I will say in Marciano's defense, is that there is nothing in his record, to suggest that he ducked anybody.

He seems to have been simply fighting the most qualified challengers.

I think that Rocky Marciano toward the Spring of 1956 noticed that other new contenders were on the horizon, namely one Floyd Patterson who was quick, had a punch, and was trained by Cus D Amato. Patterson had slowly moved up in weight to heavyweight. Marciano retired undefeated on April 20 1956 with the heavyweight title.

In an interview Louis was discussing his record and said "never fought a southpaw,Chappie said no one ever looked good against them."

The easiest way to assess Vingo as he was at the time is to look up his record.

Weill never ducked anyone after he realized Marciano was the real deal. He would have fought anyone after 1952

Baker was the #1 NBA contender in late 1955 after the Moore fight.

Contrary to the Al Weill avoided big guys position, in the summer of 1955 Weill was pumping publicly for Baker to challenge Marciano. It was the boxing press and the public which forced the Moore fight.

After Moore, any other Marciano defense would have been an anti-climax, which might have contributed to his decision to retire.

Not in the NBA in 1953. Charles was always ranked above Valdes by he NBA until after the 2nd Marciano fight.

I don't know what his height was, but he had to be well over 6'--he is taller than Marciano in fight photos even when bent at the waist. His weight for this fight was 189. He was 20. Max Baer fought at 190 at 20. Heights are always ? as some are measured barefoot and some with boots, etc.
