I mean, there's more of an evidentiary case for him than for 99.99% of all male professional boxers across the weight spectrum, let's put it that way.

Oliver McCall has one of the best chin. I am surprised that no one mentioned Muhammad Ali. I don't have that much boxing knowledge to say who "HW the best chin" is.

Well not always. Toney takes a smack to the chops better then Lennox Lewis.

I think it’s Ali. I don’t remember Oliver taking shots the way Ali did with his hands down, totally spent. Against Frazier he gets sat down for what 5 seconds after going through the meat grinder? He doesn’t even look hurt just tired. Against Foreman he took some big ones and said “They told me you could hit like Joe Louis?” Against Shavers he was a husk, a heavy bag with a jab and a few old tricks and he took hellacious shots he shouldn’t have.

A guy called Marion Wilson must be a contender. I think his bedtime grooming routine must have involved smearing his chin with cement every night. He was a mediocre boxer, but good Lord, this guy could take some poundings. 12 wins, 41 defeats! FORTY ONE DEFEATS! And not a single stoppage or KO loss. None!
Here’s a list of just a few of those boxers who fought him:
    Oliver McCall twice
    Samuel Peter
    Hasim Rahman
    Oleg Maskaev
    Greg Page
    Ike Ibeabuchi
    Carl Williams
    Andrew Golota twice
    Shannon Briggs
    Ray Mercer
    Tyrell Biggs

Some pretty good bangers there, but yet this journeyman was never even put on the deck, never mind KO’d.

Just imagine if this guy could actually punch…

The thing is McCall was often was quite a passive fighter, and never really went all out to win. I remember he took a few bombs off Bruno and some bombs off Lewis in that strange rematch, but he wasn't a guy that took flush shot after flush shot with no defence. Like for example he wasn't taking flush right hand after flush right hand bang on the chin like Ali was vs Shavers, so sometimes it's hard to judge chins based on styles.

Now obviously McCall has got a great chin, but sometimes it's hard to gauge. Like for example you have Marion Wilson who fought the best at Heavyweight and was never stopped or dropped ? but he was a crafty boxer who mostly fought to survive so again it's hard to sometimes judge.

But i would say McCall, Ali, Wilson, Cobb, Prime Holmes, Tyson had a good chin, Mercer, Chuvalo, Holyfield, V.Klitschko, Tua, 90's Foreman, all have a good arguments.

This. He might be standing, but he'd be done.

If Shavers or Wilder hit him flush he'd go down, down, down.

    All right, Jack, I’ll play.

First, the question is whether he had the best chin ever (or at least in the modern boxing era), NOT whether he took stronger shots than others (regardless of weight class).

So you either don’t understand the definition of terms or you tried to subtly shift the discussion.

Having taken stronger shots than another boxer =/= having a better chin.

Why you ask? Because the boxer you’re comparing to may have been able to take the same shots but didn’t have the opportunity. A cruiserweight or light heavy hit with the same shots Oliver was hit with in his career might also not have gone down. So in perfect fact, it isn’t proven.

Yours is a supposition that a heavyweight by definition takes bigger shots, which is on its surface probably correct — but it doesn’t mean another boxer doesn’t have a better chin if that boxer wasn’t hit by those same shots. We don’t know that those shots would have felled James Toney (who held up pretty well) or Marvin Hagler for that matter.

Yes, it’s possible that the very force of those blows may have knocked a lighter man to the canvas, but that’s not necessarily a chin question — it’s a mass question and whether that boxer (say Hagler) had sufficient mass to stay on his feet. Even if knocked down by a Lennox Lewis right, Marvin might bounce back up with no ill effects … because his chin withstood it even if his body couldn’t withstand the brunt of the blow and stay upright.

Having a great chin means withstanding blows without being fogged or having your legs or body go wobbly, not necessarily never going down — a guy with a great chin can suffer a flash knockdown because he was hit with a blow while his feet were tangled or something. Doesn’t mean his chin wasn’t great.
