They were very different fighters. Baer took a much better punch, and was stronger, Johansson was a better boxer, and not nearly as reckless. KO1s in general happen way more often in fantasy fights than in reality.
Wrong. @djanders is the progenitor to all SHWs. He started the sport of wrestling miniature bulls in Japan for God sake. He was banned from wrestling in human competitions, if you had his chest musculature it would crack your rib cage to flex it. Get your history straight heathen.
A glass jawed giant who was a sucker for a right hand and had very moderate power of his own ,is pitted against a fine right hand puncher who was never outpointed. Toughie!
Liston 73 nails it on the head!! Big boy Primo gets hit, time and time again by Ingo s bingo.. It doesn't even go as far as the Baer v Carnera fight, for me. I'd be surprised if it gets past 8.
Even a casual, errant right hand Bingo would at some time or another find poor Primo's chin...then if it wouldn't be over at that point, then it would be over, and frighteningly so after Ingo's follow up volley and finishing touches. Reference Ingo-Machen if you have to.
The problem with using the Baer/Carnera fight as a benchmark, is that Baer was more Madcap Maxie than Livermore Larruper, in this bout. He clowned his way through a good deal of the fight; enough of the time that one has to wonder how long the contest might have lasted, had Baer actually pressed for the early finish. The point being that, regardless of what one thinks of Johansson's capabilities, does he actually need to be a superior fighter to Baer, in order to get the job done against Carnera?
I still believe Carnera broke his ankle during the first knockdown against Baer. That being said, big, explosive punchers were a poor stylistic matchup for Primo who liked to poke at his opponents with a jab and control engagements with sheer size until he got the decision. Sure, he could maul his opponents inside, especially with that right uppercut of his, but the general game plan he followed gave a puncher plenty opportunities to find his jaw.
Carnera could be beaten easily by any 200lb with with skills and a punch. Sharkey when he tried embarrassed him in first fight larry gains easily took him to school Pillow punching Tommy Loughran staggered primo with one right hand on film then “backed off” louis said Carnera had nothing at all to offer but size to intimidate
