Probably true. But I do like how he sets up that lunging right with the jab. Not a bad contender at all

Think a lot of guys judge him from his days after Marciano. By then he lost his will to train seriously and was wildly inconsistent (his own fault). Despite that he still have good contenders everything they could handle taking the likes of Baker and a Lastarza to split decisions had a controversial draw to hanz Neuhaus in his turf.
At his best he was beating good contenders consistently
Walcott, Brion, Satterfield, Thompson. Later on Charles. You’d be hard pressed to find many with a better list of scalps.

Cause Layne didn't look as athletic as Williams. Seamus can't talk his bullsh*t takes about lack of fast twitch muscles about Cleveland because of that.

A guy can be a rough handful and not look good. But if he’s beating everyone and making good guys look bad…He’s good!

Ezz beat the living hel l out of him the two times the incompetent ref, and also single judge, didn't declare 7 of the rounds a draw.

Layne had balls but refused to train, got disheartened early in his career and banked too much on his punch for his actual talent.

I wonder how they'd see Williams if he was built chubby. I wonder which HW would become the new figure of ogle amongst that crowd.

There was nothing incompetent about Layne beating Charles in their second fight. You might not like how it was scored but it was a close fight and the right guy won. Its funny how people who have never seen that fight talk in absolute certainties about it. I have seen it in its entirety and Layne was the one coming forward, throwing more, pressuring, roughed charles up in fighting a very physical fight and more often than not it was Layne who was finishing the exchanges. I had always believed the stories that it was a robbery as well until I saw it. You can criticize Dempsey for sitting on the fence and not picking a winner in those rounds but it still would have been a one or two round fight regardless.

My goodness. If Williams was chubby? Nobody would talk about him. Those guys would be Swooning over somebody else.

Guys you gotta chill, Seamus is the only guy who's shitting on Layne, not everyone generally

He wouldn’t be fighting at HW today at all. In our era of 24 hour weigh ins, he’d very likely be a LHW. He wasn’t that skilled, but he made the most with his physical gifts. Joe Smith Jr is considered one of the top guys of his division, and he isn’t that skilled either. So it’s not that boxing wasn’t refined back then, it was just a case of a lesser boxer who rose up the ranks with mainly his physical gifts.

I don't see much to rave about.
He looks pretty slow , predictable and plodding, with poor defence.
Layne got a highly dubious dec over Charles who beat him up twice .
A win over a washed up Thompson.
A win over Satterfield who lost plenty of times.
His claim to fame imo was his upset of Walcott ,undeniably a great win , but Walcott was never the most consistent of men. Thanks for posting this.

Again, youve got to love people criticize decisions they havent seen. The Layne-Charles 2 decision wasnt a robbery by any stretch. Very close fight that could have gone either way.

I didnt call it a robbery I said it was a highly dubious decision and those ringside appear to have agreed.

"In a blatantly obvious hometown decision, Referee Jack Dempsey scored 2 rounds for Layne, 1 round for Charles with 7 rounds even. Most objective observers felt Charles had won. During the fight Layne butted Charles repeatedly without caution from the referee."

Legendary cornerman and trainer Ray Arcel said,"Instead of adding dignity to the fight game, Dempsey has added disgrace."
