AJ: I thought I was winning the first fight and I deliberately let Usyk beat me up in the last round

“I swear I thought I was [winning]. I thought I was looking like Muhammad Ali in there,” he said.

“I can show you sparring footage where I’m on the ropes leaning back. They tell you to train adversity, right. So put your hands down and let a motherf----- throw punches at you and you just sit, sit, sit. That’s how you gain confidence. So, in the fight in the 12th, I’m doing this stuff.

“Throughout the fight I thought I was winning but at that stage I kind of knew it was close. I thought at that stage I was well in the fight because it didn’t seem like there was any real communication as to where I’m at. Like ‘you’re losing this fight… you’re down by two rounds’. I didn’t get that.

“I’m not blaming anyone by saying that but I didn’t get any impression that I was losing the fight. I thought we were well in it. That’s why when they announced the name I was kind of like ‘huh?’

“So, I was jabbing and jabbing. It was hard to accept afterwards. Now when I watch it back, I think he won by three rounds, that’s probably from the ninth round onwards.”

Clearly states he lost by three rounds, which is still not enough, but title acts like he thinks he won even after the fact.

So you cherrypick the thread title despite AJ admitting he lost by a sizeable margin after watching it back

I actually gained some respect for AJ when he said he felt he lost by 3 rounds after watching it back, Im sure in the heat of battle it can feel like you are winning and if no1 is telling you otherwise then why would you think otherwise?

My lord that's an alarming level of delusion right there.

I'm just trying to work out why he let Usyk beat him up in the last round. Maybe he was trying to tire him out then nudge him over like Homer in the Simpsons boxing episode?

Fools, AJ purposely lost so he can get the big money in Saudi Arabia and become a three time champion. AJ is playing 4D chess with y'all.

There are times when AJ reminds me of Nigel Tufnel.

I assume that when he says that he thought he was looking like Ali in there, he was referring to the Ali who fought Berbick...

The thread title is fine, OP used the past tense so I came in expecting to hear how AJ accepted he didn't win the fight.

I don't fully buy what he's saying, I think he was letting himself get hit in the 12th because he had just taken 12 rounds of punishment and couldn't defend anymore. He was done. If the round had been seconds longer he would have gotten stopped.

IF it does not end up Usyk via TKO
