And you know what? Cotto can box! If there's one fight that truly shows off the versatility of his skills its this fight. I watch him in this fight & the way he soaked up those hooks (with ease) while slipping the combos Shane threw, especially on the ropes was amazing, he truly would not be denied, he was liquid smooth. The man's got tremendous footwork, a solid defence and showed a variety of styles in this fight switching from jabbing to pressure based attacks at will not to mention A-class stamina - he kept that going without a hint of exhaustion the whole 12 rounds. To do that and hold your own against SSM is no mean feat, SMM is fast, slick and accurate and doesn't waste punches. If there is a showcase for just how far Cotto has come this is the fight to do it. I just can't see Margarito landing those combo's with effect if Cotto slips the way he slipped SSM's combos - if he can slip as effeciently as he did SSM then I can't see any way for Marg to beat him absolutely none while Cotto will eat him alive on the inside given the chance and is clearly also the better outside boxer. I just wanted to say that. If any of you have the fight on DVD or whatever give it a 2nd viewing and you'll see what I'm talking about.
He certainly showed he was more of a complete boxer than many gave him credit for prior to this fight. I was impressed myself at how well rounded his game was that night, very impressed indeed
Did you see the last 4 rounds? Cotto suddently backed off in the 9th round and got cought every once in a while on the ropes he was exhausted but so was mosley. Mosley wasnt capitalizing on this and instead he was being hit with a monster jab while coming in, didnt want to risk it. Well in Margos case this wont be a problem, Margo will dominate the last rounds
SSM is not the same phenome at WW as he was before moving up to LMW. Cruz, Estrada, and Collazo all went the distance with SSM. The Mosely in those fights is a different man from the one who starched Adrian Stone-(just prior to Forrest).
He is not near as good as he once was but he is still a solid fighter. I dont think he would have much chance beating PBF as everyone thought he would have a year or so ago. Yeah he took Collazo the difference but he schooled him easily. Hatton got a gift against Collazo fight so that shows how Hatton was being overrated.
While I agree he was impressive in that performance, as others have said Shane wasn't at his peak. He will have to be careful with Margarito's uppercuts. Margarito throws long uppercuts from strange angles. In general he throws punches from strange angles and sometimes the orthodox style boxers aren't accustomed to blocking them.
I watched it this morning too I am impressed with cotto, he is definityly maturing as a fighter as time goes on and he never fails to entertain
LOL, Mosley looked like ass against Cotto. :dead Watch Vargas vs. Mosley I, Shane is damaged goods and has been for some time. Do yourself a favor and watch De La Hoya vs. Mosley I or even II, and then watch Cotto vs. Mosley.
Cotto counter punched Mosley very effectively in the last three rounds. In the ninth round the cut he got from a Judah uppercut is why Cotto backed off in the ninth round.
You also have to remember Vargas had been on a downfall since his back was hurt so bad. He Vargas been healthy. Mosley would have lost or got a draw. Vargas has a very bad back before he fought Mosley.
