Tunney was just too small. Lennox Lewis was a cerebral fighter and made a good account of himself

 

tunneys evasiveness is very impressive but always against shorter smaller slower older boxers with a shorter reach. Tunney kept his hands low and leaned backed using his foot speed and length to get out of the way of punches. No head movement. Tyson would annihilate this type of defense

Tunney never proved he could take on a fighter even close to Tyson’s caliber. Tyson was a freakishly strong 220lb. Tunney never fought a man above 200lb. Tunney also never fought too black men.

Tyson knocked out Michael Spinks in 1 round. Spinks was as great or greater than Tunney and bigger too. Tyson had no problem slipping past the jabs of 6’5” 220lb fast handed world class fighters. And once Tyson lands, 190lb gene is finished

 

Tyson was a husk of himself and Lennox had physical advantages. This is a prime Tyson against a smaller man.

 

I think I’d favor Tyson

 

IMHO, I agree with those who don't think Tunney will last long with Mike Tyson. I'd be amazed if Gene was still there in the 4th round. Normally I don't pick a guy to be knocked out when he never OFFICIALLY was, but I'm making an exception for Gene (James J.) Tunney.

Never fought a black man….is a fair point.

At the very least, it improperly limits the field of fighters at any given time that a champion can claim dominance over.

 

Tyson was more powerful and threw quicker combos and if he could have fought Tunney weighing what Tunney weighed v Dempsey he would have been even quicker.

 

Maybe...Except it is hard to picture Tunney nervous.
The only thing that makes me think Tunney could at best run it close is Tyson vs. Tillis.
Tunney was better than Tillis, who had just lost his last 3 fights before Tyson, & 4 out of his last 5.
Albeit against very good opposition. Tillis was 208 lbs., & Tyson faded late.
Tyson was about at the beginning of his prime.
Tillis defied all conventional wisdom about how to fight Tyson & ran him close.

This is at least a good argument that Tunney might do as well-which means he would have a chance.
Although all other lines of reasoning lead me to pick Tyson.

 

Huh? Nobody asked Tyson to be so light for this hypothetical bout.
If not too drained he may have been quicker, but that would be far below his natural fighting weight.
Shedding so much muscle would have made him weaker & less powerful, & then Tunney would likely be the favorite.

 

Yeah a 170 pound fighter like Tunney could beat any version of Tyson because you said so.

 

Lol you should be a comedian. Tunney was considered skill for 1910's 1920's standards. That doesn't equate to being skilled compared to any modern boxer. You probably didn't realize this but boxing has evolved since the 1910's. Once you get pass the skill level you have to realize Tunney was a 170 pound fighter. You do realize there are weight classes for a reason fight?

Marvis Frazier was 100 times more skilled than Tunney. Marvis Frazier was bigger Tunney. Marvis Frazier tried to run. He still got knocked out in what 30 seconds? The exact same thing would happen to Tunney.
