I thought this would be an interesting fanatsy match up which could have happened when JT after looked very good beating Evander Holyfield and Tyson stopping Clifford Etienne in 2003.
Even the old washed up Version of Tyson would be to much for Toney to Handle. Based on his next performace, Vs Danny Williams...the tools were in place during that fight. He jabbeb his way in, bobbed and weaved and threw combinations. He did hurt his knee, and Danny hits a lot harder, and is a lot bigger, than Toney. The 1st round was pretty vintage, and really the last time we saw iron Mike look good. If dug into Toney the way he did Danny, it would be a prety convincing win. Toney could not wear him down, keep him off, out speed him, out power him, or out hit him.
Toney was good, but his lack of dedication to come as fit as possible to the ring is his downfall... he may have been of the best boxers in terms of defensive/countering skill.... but he would have been great if he had the fitness and dedication to training to keep himself in shape. And he has been hurt before, as I heard one person say in over 50 fights he has never been hurt once. He was hurt in his first title defense....can remeber who....but it was 6 weeks after he fought michael Nunn.
OK, so how about 1989 Tyson versus 2003 Toney? Does Toney still have an advantage then..afterall, Tyson did come forward..
you wouldnt know. i fancy toney based on williams and mcbride showing during the next 2 years. it would of been a tv station and new writers dream and have everyone talking
Toney would be way too smart for a 2003 Tyson. All he would have to do is survive a few early rounds and wait for Tyson to settle down. then Toney would go to work and outclass Mike for the rest of the fight.
Toney would have won. Tyson faded fast after the Lewis beatdown he got, while Toney was still very fast and supremely skilled. It wouldn't have surprised me at all if Toney were to have stopped Tyson just like he did Holyfield.
