What’s your definition of cultural impact? Because he certain didn’t impact black America in a positive way, in fact his actions only allowed white men to stay on top for longer and bend the rules now let’s talk boxing…given his 7 year duck of his number 1 contender (unprecedented in boxing history) and defending his title again men who LOST in title eliminators to a middleweight…how in the world does Jack Dempsey crack the top 10 all time? We all know whom you don’t know like, let’s hope you don’t have another tantrum like you did with Marciano. At this point I’m wondering if you’re stalking me.
If cultral impact is about how much you like the fighter, or their impact, then people could easily justify excluding Jack Johnson Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson from the top 10. It's clearly not about how much you like them. Do you understand how internet forums work? This thread was near the top of the front page, and I went through it, responding to what I wanted to respond to. I don't have Jack Dempsey in my Top 10, so ask that question to someone who puts Dempsey in their top 10. I hope you'll maybe learn some basic reading comprehension skills one day.
If that bothers you, are you also bothered that Jack Johnson drew the color line. He refused to defend his title against a Black. Yet you rate him. Joe Jeanette criticized Johnson, saying, "Jack forgot about his old friends after he became champion and drew the color line against his own people."
Johnson was black and hated. To the point where the guy had to flee the country. His entire situation is different And not for nothing..At least he fought them some of them multiple times. Dempsey never fought any of them after getting his ribs broken in a draw by John Lester Johnson
Yeah he was a fan favorite. SO WHAT. I like the way the guy fights I appreciate his incredible talent rate him highly head to head in a p4p sense. but his title reign is one of biggest stains in boxing history how he can possibly rate above someone like Lennox Lewis ?
Should have added a criteria for being a role model. Might have bumped up Lennox Lewis and fit Floyd Patterson in my top ten because they carried themselves with grace and dignity.
I have Dempsey at 9 and Lennox at 5. If I did my list tomorrow I might have Lennox at 3 or 4. People can pooh pooh cultural impact all they want but that's why they paid a retired fighter 100 million dollars to fight a You Tuber. If the FOTC was today Joe and Muhammad would be splitting a 500 million dollar payout. Back to Dempsey most lists today still have him in the top ten while a lot old timers have been bumped out. And back to the FOTC if the gross for Pacquiao-Mayweather was 600 million the gross for the FOTC would be a billion dollars.
But why? Those guys aren't considered the best because of how famous they are, they're considered the best because of their accomplishments, accolades, longevity, dominance, quality of competition, etc. All way more important than popularity. Some of those guys have others who could be considered greater than them. Just because they're the most famous doesn't mean they're the greatest by default. Popularity a lot of the time is more so what you do outside the ring than inside. Sometimes its not even in your control. Its not Pongsaklek Wonjongkam's fault that he wasn't born as a white American Heavyweight and therefore had no shot at being as famous as Morrison is to the non boxing fan public.
George Foreman is the only fighter on that list who turned another member of the all time great club who was also in his prime or near to it into a human satellite.
