I just read this the other day. After Lewiston, Ali and Liston became friends. They would talk on the phone frequently and would visit each other's dressing rooms before a fight. Ali is quoted as saying that Liston was the most totally honest person he ever knew. Ali also said that Liston could have beaten any HW champion in history other than himself (Ali). Ali also told Liston he would give him a rematch if he could get a couple of good wins under his belt. Liston wanted that but Ali was banned from boxing soon after that.
Thanks for posting. They asked a much older Ali what he would say to Liston if he was alive. He said, "Man, you scared me."
Appreciate your post. Did you read it from hard copy or online? If you could cite or link the source that would be awesome. Thanks.
Always liked this pic of Liston goofing with Ali and Terrell. Those mitts on Liston though…..geez. https://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Ex-heavyweight-champion-Ernie-Terrell-dies-5969464.php
Tyson and Liston look like the HWS you'd most be afraid to approach. OTOH Tyson used to go the gym I worked out at and everybody who met him said he was totally chill.
Ali said the following “George when he was young was the third best fighter I ever saw, behind me and Sonny Liston. When he came back he was a different fighter, time had took a lot from him."
I read it online. I read a couple of small articles about it and one detailed one. If I can find them, I'll post links to them.
They were after both fights especially during Muhammad Ali's 43 month absence from the ring, I believe Sonny Liston and Ali spoke about their second meeting in May 1965.
