When Oleg Maskaev fought Oliver McCall on Fox in 1996, he was billed as 15-0.

The problem was he may have been only 6-0.

Granted, this was back when former Soviet fighters turning pro was still a new thing. Sometimes, their records were a bit sketchy.

I've often wondered who the other NINE guys were that were included on his record which was passed off to the network. Who knows, he may have fought NINE other fighters.

Maskaev was a very good amateur. He beat Vitali Klitschko in the amateurs.

In his pro debut, Maskaev reportedly faced Alexander Miroshnichenko, who won the Bronze Medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics (Riddick Bowe defeated him).

Most quality amateur boxers turning pro don't face an Olympic Bronze medalist in their pro debut.

That seems to be a tough opponent ... even for his 10th pro fight it would be tough (if he actually faced nine fighters before). Maskaev also fought Nicolai Kulpin before McCall, and Kulpin was an experienced amateur as well. I have some of his amateur bouts.

Later, Miroshnichenko died by either falling down nine flights of stairs or he was tossed out the ninth floor window of his apartment building (I've heard both ... although I'm not sure how you fall down nine flights of stairs on your own).

Maybe the other NINE opponents no longer on Maskaev's record fell down the stairs, too?

Either way, I always wondered who those NINE other boxers were. Because, shortly after the McCall loss, they weren't on Maskaev's record anymore.
