Wow, the South American title fight, that a belt you don't hear from these days. and we got lots of belts! Monzon going down to Ferandez is something I'm not familiar with. Is it available to view today? You know your stuff.

How could I forget Rockabye Ruben. He was #4 on the list I made for Rummy's favorite 35 fighters poll.

I have looked for that fight, can't seem to locate it. In Carlos Monzon's development in 1967, he fought a 10 round draw against Bennie Briscoe. But on Nov 11 1972, Carlos defeated Briscoe by unanimous 15 round decision to successfully defend his World Middleweight Title, that fight can be seen on You Tube in it's entirety. And Thanks for the compliment, you are a really good poster too. Monzon went 89-3-9, 61 KO's in a career which began on Feb 6 1963 and ended on August 29 1977, he retired as champion after 14 title defenses. When Monzon retired he was riding a 82 bout unbeaten streak dating back to Oct 9 1964.

Great fighter in an underrated division throughout the 70s which I believe to be the best ever

even one of his inferior opponents, Gratien Tonna who could not deal with Monzon's combination of height, movement, and upper body strength , was later good enough to defeat Alan Minter & Kevin Finnegan and to just barely lose to top ranked Ronnie Harris.

Had he waited another year and had Hagler been given a timely title shot, we would have seen who was the better man

While I do agree with you about a potential meeting with Hagler, Monzon would have been at a disadvantage. Monzon still had all of his skills from 1972 until 1975. In 1977 he was losing interest in the sport, on June 26 1976, Carlos defeated WBC Champion Rodrigo Valdes by unanimous decision in Monte Carlo, Monaco to reattach the WBC Title that had been stripped from him, he decked Valdes in round 14 of that fight. Monzon was making movies in Argentina. A great fight between Monzon and Hagler would be if both were at their respective time. Monzon did not like to fight in the USA as the taxes were too high, he preferred Europe so the whole world could see him defend his title.

Fair enough, but IMO had this hypothetical fight happened in 1978, Monzon had schooled in commanding fashion a young Hagler who was still a work in progress and two years away of becoming a world champion himself.

Of course I am assuming a 1978 version of Monzon still focused on boxing ... a tough call if we consider by then he was already doing movies and bedding argentinian supermodels.

He was already bedding a very hot Argentinian actress Susana Gimenez.

If Monzon keeps his old form, he would beat a 1978 Hagler I think.

I figure that if Finnegan gave Marv all he could handle at the time, and Tonna was good enough to outpoint even Kevin, and Monzon stopped Tonna (Monzon clubbed Tonna on the back of the head), then Monzon has a good chance

However, a 1980 version of Hagler, forget it. NO middleweight could take Hags.

I can't disagree with that. By 1980 it was Hagler's time to shine.

Susana is still alive and ticking now on Argentinian tv.
Still looks good for her age.
