Why does Anthony Joshua smile when he gets hurt ?

That's the sign that he is scared at the moment.

 

I grew up in a low socio-economic area, it wasn't the mean streets of Watford or anything but there wasn't a lot of money around. Smiling or laughing when you are failing is a defence mechanism. It's intended to convey "I don't even care if I win lose - so you can't mock me when I do lose". In my environment the least cool thing you could do is put yourself out there and lose, so when you put yourself out there and begin to fail you need to portray it's a joke and you were never really trying anyway. I get that exact impression from AJ. What's funny is he takes his losses on the chin when he's out of the ring, so I think this is probably just a behaviour from his teenage years that rears it's head when he's under heavy duress.

I didn't learn the value of resiliency until well into my 20s.

Fighters have been doing that for years, it`s a show of bravado, AJ is delusional and can`t handle the fact that he can be hurt.

 

He is fasinated by the stars dancing around his head.

 

Embarrassment and shame.

It's actually not a good coping mechanism. It shows mental weakness.

Some boxers fight back harder when they're hurt and that's a better response.

And harsh can also be the truth.

He smiles because he's embarrassed when he's being out-boxed and/or hurt. When he knows he doesn't have the tools and/or stamina to respond physically.

When he was on the ropes at the end of the Uysk fight, shipping punches and close to being stopped, don't you think if he had the energy he'd have chosen to counter rather than grin and drop his hands?

The only time I've seen him smile confidently was in the early rounds of the Whyte fight. But that was AJ 1.0 and he doesn't exist anymore...
