Is there any reason why southpaws are pretty common nowadays? It was uncommon and even a bit unusual for such a long time. Are all these southpaws inverted or actually left handed?
Southpaws are commonly known to eat the canvass too. The guy in your pic is gonna definitely eat some, Pacquiao style, against Crawford.
I have actually been thinking the same thing for about a year. It's pretty amazing how many big and semi-big fights have a righty-lefty match up. This, of course, leads to the inevitable announcer comment that the boxer who gets his lead fight outside the other's has the advantage.
From current fighters Crawford, Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson are right-handed but actually fight as southpaws. Donaire is left-handed but uses an orthodox guard. And many don't know that Mike Tyson is a lefty that always boxed orthodox.
Even weirder since most of the top guys have been fighting since they were kids. Is it just a new thing for coaches to teach southpaw to everyone?
Me neither, they seem to be less fluid than orthodox fighters, the stance lends itself to awkwardness and not a little treading on the others toes ! also you could name the ATG southpaws on one hand, the above notwithstanding Maurice Hope was one of the best it gets of the genre, saw and spoke to him at a LEBA function a few years ago, a nice unassuming man, soft in voice and manner. stay safe guys.
