@billyb71 posted Joe Louis was addicted to heroin and Liston was his dealer? Is that true? Who are some other boy scouts of boxing that suffered from addiction in life?
Boy scout? That’s what you’d call the most dangerous offensive boxer of all time? Joe wasn’t a Boy Scout ever in his life expect for in the newspapers.
Joe Louis got hooked because of a young drug addict girlfriend that injected him when he was laying next to her according to an autobiography. He stated that he liked the way it made him feel. As for Sonny Liston, that may be a missing piece of that puzzle, maybe s or maybe a Hot Shot was given to him as the result of Liston talking too much about the behind the scene actins relating to the underworld.
I really don’t know if Liston was a addict or not. I don’t think anyone will ever know the truth. Could the Mob been in on his murder? That’s certainly possible he was connected with them. I believe in Vegas he was dealing with Ash Resnick- think I spelled that right. There are a lot of conspiracies out there. Plenty of documentaries on it also. Supposedly he was supposed to get a cut of Ali’s winnings for life for taking a dive etc…. And at the end of the day he could have just died from a overdose also. It is a very interesting subject though when you start reading about it etc…:
Joe Louis had issues with cocaine, he got extremely paranoid and thought people were spying on him through the vents in his hotel room. Alexis Arguello got hooked on coke and the bottle as well. It’s common in boxing just like others in sports (and all aspects of life).
Leonard had a coke problem. Don't know that he was ever portrayed a boyscout by Willie Pastrano was a heroin addict.
I'm not sure if Barney Ross was ever a total "boyscout' type, but serious war injuries caused him to become addicted to drugs...an addiction he beat eventually.
