Great stuff. Recall Moorer s time in the light heavy division very well. He was an exciting guy and there were a few articles in the mags about him, being the Tyson of the lightheavy s. All good stuff, we don't seem to get guys like Moorer now.
Back in the day I remember reading/hearing he walked around at 210-15 and the last 10 were very hard to get off of him to make 175. I suspect closer to 190 in ring at light heavy. He also IIRC had bad eating habits.
yes he was overweight all the time. this true. & but believe he is not so much over 175 for the early fight . he look it like 175-185 if only I compare with my eyes him self with his self as 215 version looks much thick & fatter version. anyway yes not a chance is it that he can stayed at 175 with appetite of the eating so much. but heavyweight made him too lazy with it! would be perfect for the cruiser division class
Only two men ever knocked Moorer out I'm his entire 20 year pro career. Those two men happen to be two of the hardest punchers ever in George Foreman and David Tua. The doctor stopped the 2nd fight against Holyfield after Moorer was down several times. The myth about Moorer not being tough or having a weak chin is inaccurate. It's true he was hurt multiple times but he was only truly knocked out twice and both times were at heavyweight.
He didn’t fight anyone w a pulse at 175. It’s entirely possible that Tarver could exceed Stewart and Cooper.
As I said before his biggest test at 175 was vs a faded Leslie Stewart, and to be honest Moorer did struggle in that fight alot. If I remember rightly he might of even been behind on points at the time of the stoppage, to me that fight shows that Moorer isn't quite the killer hes made out to be at 175. Now obviously with Moorer's size, power, southpaw stance, he would be problematic for quite a few top Light Heavyweights. But I don't think hes ever the top man in any Light Heavyweight era, and I think that's what @Fergy was asking. On a side note Moorer vs Holyfield at Cruiserweight might of been interesting
I do think Moorer's chin was average, kind of like Juan Manuel Marquez in that regard. I'm a big fan of Marquez but Marquez like Moorer was hurt numerous times and floored, but there tremendous heart can overcome that.
I absolutely agree with 100%. He didn't have the greatest chin but some folks act like he was made of glass and had no heart which is not true. He fought through absolute hell against Bert Cooper. Not many fighters would have survived that onslaught but he did. Only the insane power of Foreman and Tua kept him on the deck.
I think Moorer was also shot vs Tua to be fair, although I think a fast starting Tua would of been problematic even for a prime Moorer. But yeah I agree certainly not a glass chin, I think average chin is about right. But his fighting heart is certainly never in question, he took a beating vs Holyfield in their 2nd fight and kept getting up. Probably one of the bravest displays along with Frazier getting up multiple times vs Foreman, and Patterson vs Johansson.
He made his name from beating a declining Jones JR, Hopkins showed just how limited he is. His best win is probably Griffin or Glen Johnson
