Tommy Hearns: At 147 pounds, Tommy was so quick and powerful. He was also a better boxer than he was given credit for, although he didn’t always use [his skills] the way he should have. Tommy’s punches were so effective and long. How did Tommy`s skills rate out of 10?
A 10. Thiers only two welters I see beating him at the weight. The one that did, and the Original "Sugar Ray".
I favour hitman in a 12 round fight vs SRL. Also a hard hitter at 147 could catch him, like say a Tito.
Agree, a few might run him close, one of these is Ted Kid Lewis, the iron boned British fighter, Hearns would not be able to intimidate Lewis, he took on and beat ,in some cases, full blown MWs and world champs at that, Mike O, Dowd, Mike Gibbons, plus the likes of Augie Ratner, Bryan Downey, Soldier Bartfield ( who gave Greb some torrid tussles ) Lewis would fight anyone at any weight, apparently had he beaten Carpentier, he was going to call out Dempsey !! Not saying for sure he would win over Hearns, but I am saying, it would be a long hard night for Tommy, and his resolution would be tested to the enth degree. stay safe Flash. chat soon.
excellent at 147, but greater by far at 154. His power, strength, and speed tripled at a more comfortable weight and without the serious flaws that dogged him as a welter Duran didnt stand a chance
A 10 doesn’t nearly get wiped by Roland (spelling?) And splattered that fast by Marvin Hagler. That fight was close for one round, it wasn’t competitive. Hamsho would’ve shattered Hearns too.
I think Napoles could pull it off confidently personally. Emile Griffith should be the favourite also in a fight.
Hagler fight was at Middleweight, so was the Roldan fight if that's who you're referring too, the question was about welter, not middleweight. There's quite a few Middleweights in history that possibly give Hearns hell.... But Hamsho isn't one of them.
Tommy at 147 pounds was a very hard puncher and a good boxer but he was physically weak with a weak chin also. He'd lose to a lot of welters historically who just like Leonard he couldn't KO early
That's if they can either take him into deep water or catch him with something big. His legs seemed to turn to silly puddy.
An iron jaw who can bang up against a glass cannon usually doesn't end well for the glass cannon. I think Hagler always had his number. I do point out what Hagler's face looked like by the end. If Hagler had a mortal chin, he would not have won that fight.
