That’s the thing with these guys like Fury and Hatton who take pride in cutting corners in training and ballooning between fights. They need extreme challenges to get them to become serious. Chisora isn’t shot enough yet to be light work for Tyson but not great enough to excite him. This would have made Chisora very dangerous for Fury.
I have been firmly in the 'it's an attention grab', 'it's tactical', 'wait this round out then be 'persuaded' back in a mega fight' camp. It fits the pattern of his previous behaviour and it seemed unlikely that he'd build himself back to the level he reached and then walk away with a massive one fight pay-check very close indeed? However, there's a simpler alternative that also fits the facts, perhaps a better fit than that offered above. Maybe Fury is genuinely finished at the peak level? There was a big drop-off from Wilder 2 Fury to Wilder 3, which of course there were reasons for, but then there always are reasons from fighters after they fail to impress. Bad camps, weight issues, trainer issues, whatever. In this case Fury's timing and agility looked a level below, still good enough to beat Wilder, but it was a far harder night than it should've been given the gulf between the two fighters from the first two fights. Credit to Wilder of course, but it raised a question mark over Fury. Then there was the Whyte fight. Difficult to judge Fury here because it seems clear that Whyte was past prime himself and didn't really manage to offer much. I'd still guess he was a level below, but not conclusive. However, if in the gym it's become clear that all those hard living checks his body wrote have now become due, then perhaps Sugar Hill has privately indicated it's time to hang'em up? That would explain the undignified chasing after the money spinning but lame Ngannou MMA crossover fight, or the farcical Del Boy with his mate as trainer story. Maybe he's had to choose between sticking around and facing a lucrative but potentially bad night against the winner of Usyk/Joshua or retiring now with an unbeaten record and a perpetual claim to be the greatest of his generation. As it stands it's a fine legacy, lineal champ, held all the belts at various times, dethroned King Wlad and tamed Wilder, it lacks the cherry on the top but maybe he thinks that cherry is really the 'waffa thin' after dinner mint that Mr Creosote foolishly gobbles up....
