What is the lineal championship ? I thought you have to "beat the man who beat the man", so surely the next Lineal Champion would be the fighter who beats Fury ?

Also, if the Lineal Champion retires, when does the reign restart - when an Undisputed Champion is crowned ? If that's the case, could you end up in a situation with two Lineal Champions in the same division simultaneously ?

 

Exactly. The lineal system operates more like the meritocracy we expect from other sports, where the best play the best to determine who is the world champion. It also has much deeper and richer history that what other sports have to offer, yet some wave it off as if there's no value at all. It's also one of the only tools we have to wade through the corruption of the sport.

 

It can be clear cut at times - like with lewis or klitchos, but messy at other times, like when a Lineal champ retires. You will probably only know who the new lineal champ is in hindsight, possibly well after, once a new undisputed/unified champ is in place. Work your way backwards to find the chain.
