    He looks like my uncle who hasn’t lifted anything heavier then his TV remote in a long time. Is stocky a synonym of obese now?

    No, stocky refers to guys who look chunky at first glance but have powerful muscle. I've met several handymen, construction guys, mechanics, and wrestlers/power lifters who have that kind of build. They were all strong as hell.

    You can't, but if someone lifts weights on a regular basis (3-4x a week) and is always increasing their reps/max once they've gotten used to a certain amount and targets several areas of their body, it's going to be pretty obvious in most cases. The muscles take on certain shapes and have definition you usually can't get from other physical activities.
