Ali V Ingo In 1962

Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) takes this bout in 1962. Ali had beaten Archie Moore on Nov 15 1962 by a TKO 4, Ingo was on the slide downward. Ingo a former World Champion had just been kayoed by Champion Floyd Patterson in their rubber match on March 13 1961. Ingo had been inactive since that fray. Ali on the other hand had been active in 1962 with stoppage wins over Sonny Banks, Billy Daniels, Alejandro Lavorante and Archie Moore. Ingo now appeared vulnerable, both have sparred before in the past, with Ingo Commenting that Clay was very very fast. I see a young Ali using his keen reflexes, footwork and speed to his greater advantage. Ali stops Ingo in the fifth round as Ali's stamina is in peak form.

Richard i'm not the most knowledgeable on Johansson, but isn't he primarily known for his right hand power ? which was nicknamed "Hammer Of Thor" ? Ali as we know was a bit of a sucker for the left hook, and showed some vulnerability to it early in his career vs Banks, Cooper.

To my knowledge Johansson wasn't noted for his left hook was he ? so i don't see Johansson's right hand power being that much of a weapon vs Ali. And whilst Ali was a bit green and Johansson had the experience, Johansson was also coming towards the end of his career, lets not forget Johansson almost getting stopped by Brian London.

Overall i don't really see Johansson's classic boxing style, being that effective vs the fleet footed quick Ali, and i see Ali winning by stoppage between 8-10.

 

I totally agree with you as my post indicates. Muhammad Ali was not a dumb Bumkin to be suckered by the Ingo Bingo. Johansson was very big in European circles and his quick one round knockout of the imported Eddie Machen on Sept 14 1958 in Sweden gave Ingo that notoriety to get a shot at champion Floyd Patterson in June 1959.

 

I agree with the others. I would guess Ali by stoppage around round #4.

He was never a hired sparring partner for Ingo, only sparred him once when Ingo came into the gym and looked for somebody to spar. Apparently, Clay made him look really bad.

Ingemar Johansson would never have been the heavyweight champion if in time (1959.) Floyd Patterson, or Ingemar Johansson had a fight against Sonny Liston.
Does anyone think Ingemar Johansson would have done better than Floyd Patterson vs. Sonny Liston (1959-1962)?
Well, maybe Ingemar Johansson wouldn't fall in the first round, but he wouldn't see the end of the fight on his feet; surely.
Floyd Patterson, Ingemar Johansson, and Cus D'Amato knew it too.
So they avoided Sonny Liston for as long as they could.

 

A fight between a peak sonny and ingo would be a blood bath.

And by "blood bath" i mean sonny bathing himself in ingo's blood after decapitating him in 2 rounds.
