Elderly Holmes matches up no different to Mercer than Old man Louis would have. In fact Larry was much older than Louis. And your guy Mercer still got his behind handed to him.
Am I the only one who is surprised in the size difference here? Lennox doesn't look nearly as gigantic as some may think.
I think Lennox is way too good for Rocky to overcome size advantage. I can see Marciano beating a lot of Lewis sized fighters, just not Lewis himself.
This fight has been done many times here, Lewis would destroy Rocky. The size difference is ridiculous shouldn't even be in the ring together. Not only is Rocky giving up close to 70 pounds, he's much shorter, his arm length is less then many welterweights and he'd be the less skilled slower man in the ring. Match him up against comparably sized opponents.
Larry was a textbook out-boxer, a mover. Louis was no such thing, he was flat footed. Louis fits more into a boxer-puncher category, but he sure as hell wasn't a mover.
You think Larry beat Mercer by moving? You can’t support your own view. There can’t be conviction in what you are saying because you can’t have watched your guy Mercer lose so badly to a stationary and grandfatherly Larry Holmes who was many years older than old Joe Louis had been against Rocky. Larry was certainly no better than old Joe Louis by then.
Larry was better. He might have slown down, just like Louis, but he still had a better defense, and his reach and height.
A plodding 185 pounder walking at Lennox Lewis? Yeah, good luck with that. Lewis absolutely blows him away in a couple of rounds, sorry to the nostalgia merchants
Oh you decided an even older Larry was better than old Joe Louis because he could beat your guy Ray Mercer? I see it now. He has to be better. Yes yes. Gee.What a surprise. Having not won a fight since 1985, after 3 back to back shattering losses to Spinks and Tyson, at age 42 Larry embarks on a 5 fight comeback in 1991 ….but is somehow closer to his own prime than Joe Louis was in 1951 after the 37 year old Brown Bomber was on a 9 fight winning comeback after losing to the current champion?
Spurious to suggest that Marciano would be ‘easy’ over 200lbs. You could easily just envision him cutting weight and fighting light heavies or—dare I say it—super middleweights. Whatever you think, even stylistically Marciano has little for Lennox. People on this board fall over themselves to defend their heroes. Match Marciano up with people his own size. Even today’s cruiserweights would be big compared to him—seeing as most are likely 215-220 in the ring—but those are more interesting matchups to talk about than Lennox Lewis for gawds sake
No, I decided that cause physical assets like height and reach are still there even in your 40s, and Holmes had those, unlike Louis. Also, I see a young Holmes as better than a young Louis, and an old Holmes was also better than an old Louis. No, Holmes is not closer to his prime, but 40+ Holmes was still better than late 30s Louis.
Are you sure about this? If that’s your starting point, if you start at the point that you think Larry was always way better than Joe Louis… then I don’t know what to say.
