10-0 Joe Frazier vs Larry Holmes

So Larry is 10 - 0 too?
If that s the case then Holmes on points, I think.
With Joe maybe getting rocked early but battling back.

10-0 Joe Frazier would still do better than Marvis Frazier (one of my Top 25 Most Spectacular Knockouts contenders).

Joe was dropped in the first round by Mike Bruce in Joe's second pro fight.

In Joe's 12th fight, he got dropped twice in the second round by Bonavena.

Joe looked like this in his 10th pro fight against Al Jones. So he'd be coming off this win when he faced Holmes. And he looks "really green" here. That first left hook he throws misses by a mile.

Marvis looked pretty good in his ninth and 10th pro fights, beating the undefeated James Broad and 57-win pro Joe Bugner.

(Considering Bugner beat Greg Page, David Bey and "Quick" Tillis after this, he still had something left in the tank). And, if I'm not mistaken, Marvis hadn't been knocked down as a pro yet.

Joe, in his 11th pro fight, probably would've done just as bad as Marvis did against a 44-0 Larry Holmes.

Holmes KO early.

Marvis was terribly mismanaged as a pro.

 

No offence but why even make such a thread. What is there to discuss? What interesting discussion is there to be stirred?

 

Oh come on. Way, way too green to be going up against a prime Holmes. He'd get timed and KO'd, just like Marvis did.

Holmes stays outside, stays on his bicycle and jabs frazier all night long, controlling distance with that long, hard, jab to win by decision.

 

Terrific post presenting an unpopular but very possible scenario, backed up by logical assertions and facts. Kudos.

 

Certainly a possibility. Nothing against Frazier. Just not enough experience to be in the ring with an ATG in his prime. Mind you, I think a prime Frazier would probably stop Holmes after a brutal fight.

 

In Fairness to Marvis he didn’t have the worst chin he survived BoneCrusher maybe it was just how he was hit against Holmes and Tyson? A rematch could’ve looked totally different.

 

Completely unsaid at this point is that Joe was yet to develop his legendary bob and weave style which was implemented a but later by Eddie Futch. It was built out of necessity and without it he wouldn't have fared near as well as he did. So Joe's not going to be near as hard a target and is going to be standing tall a helluva lot more than he did a few years later. This is obviously going to make him a far easier target for Holmes jab and straight right hand and when he did bob a little it was predictable and not as varied like later on so the uppercut will quite likely find a home at times as well.

Holmes had started to decline and wasn't as sharp as he had been a year or two prior as well , let it be said.

I think Holmes is a decent chance at stopping this much less defensively efficient Frazier tbh. He was always a good finisher willing to lay it on the line. I think he might get him.

 

The obvious answer is Holmes, though exactly HOW it ends I can’t say.
