I am so happy that Usyk and one of his greatest opponents both got important title wins within less than a week. Go iron man! POST SCRIPT: Gassiev looked physically good! No at all doughy like last time out.
Apart from possibly David Haye - I think Gassiev was the hardest puncher that the Cruiserweight division has ever seen.
Jeremiah Milton (6-0, 5 KO) stopped opponent Nick Jones by KO (9-5, 6 KO) at 2:49 of Round 2 of their HW fight on the Pedraza v. Commey card. Jones missed with a windmilling shot and met with a right-hand to the temple by Milton. Not long after, Efe Ajagba (16-1) stopped (TKO) opponent Jozsef Darmos (14-5-3) at the 1:15 mark of the second round of their HW fight on the same card. Darmos, unsuprisingly, quickly became a target for Ajagba's power shots. He was dropped twice in the 2nd round before the fight was waved off. The stoppage seemed a bit premature, but Darmos was very overmatched here. BTW: Trey Lippe did not fight on this card because he suffered (yet another) hand injury during his training.
I think this is a good fight, though. Lerena needs to show he can mix it with the giants - and Wach isn't a bad place to start because he's not all that far shy of 43 years-old. I think Lerena is pretty dangerous in a phonebooth fight and I think he can get Wach there eventually. Just a matter of working past Wach's jab - which seems very do-able once Wach begins to tire.
Richard Torrez Jr (3-0, 3 KO) required just 44 seconds to log a vicious KO victory over Marco Antonio Canedo (4-3). Torrez let his hands go almost immediately against his badly-overmatched opponent. After first dropping him, Torrez then unloaded several very heavy shots on Canedo - including a final shot as Canedo fell, face-down to the canvas. This had shades of David Tua vs. Johnny Ruiz. though it seems very doubtful that Canedo's career will recover in the fashion that Ruiz's did! Canedo remained motionless on the canvas for several long minutes before finally being able to leave the ring under his own power for a precautionary visit to the hospital. Torrez Jr weighed in at 225.4 lbs for this fight. This is tantalizingly-close to the Bridgerweight limit of 224 lbs. I'm not a big fan of bridgerweight, but I wouldn't mind seeing a Torrez Jr v. Babic or Torrez Jr. vs. Rivas fight after Richard has fought a few more useufl, prepatory fights. Of course, he's unlikely to find such fights at Bridgerweight where the total number of available fighters can be comfortably counted on one hand.
Jared "Big Baby" Anderson made it 12 KOs in 12 fights as he stopped Miljan Rovcanin (24-3-0) right as the 2nd round eneded in their heavyeweight fight. Anderson looked a bit sloppy, frankly, in the 1st round and the game Rovcanin was able to take advantage of that on a few occasions. Thereafter, however, it was all Anderson. He delivered a heavy hook to Rovcanin's body with about 20 seconds to go in the 2nd rount which seem to set up the big right hand that dropped Rovcanin to the canvas right at the bell. The hurt, but conscious Rovcanin made no attempt to rise as he was counted out.
Unbeaten heavyweight Viktor Vykhryst scored a one-sided eight round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Kevin Johnson on Saturday night in Germany. The three scores were all 80-72.
The announcers didn't mention Torrez landing a blatant shot on his opponent after the first knockdown. It was very dirty.
Damn this fight would be really nice. But i guess he has to TKO Hunis to win this fight. I hope, at least Briedis is getting some good paydays.
