I am not talking about the after the bell punches, illegal punches, etc, which are pretty well undeniable. I mean the tougher stuff to face. On a recent thread, someone claimed he loaded his gloves with a railroad spike in the Willard fight, which I have heard before. Someone else also recently claimed that he got coked up for his fights, which I hadn't heard. Simple question: are these sorts of claims true?
Didn’t he take a form of rat poison as a PED according to his former lover a liar with no bias at all.
No. The story about the railroad spike or plaster of paris in his wraps have been debunked since Dempsey sued about some of it & won. Now cocaine is alleged? I have problems with Dempsey re: who he faced, how often, even how he beat Sharkey. His accomplishments as a champion was limited. But he was not a fraud.
Occam's razor. Is it more believeable that Dempsey took coke to... enhance his ferociousness?! And where in the hell would he even hide a railroad spike? How would that have not caused much more obvious aesthetic damage to Willard? There isn't even a general consensus on Willards injuries. More likely these are stories made up to deface Dempsey's image, legacy, and to invalidate his successes. I'm not here to ride Dempsey's meat, but come on, the guy didn't use coke as a PED lmao. Dempsey may have used dirty tactics. But theyre dirty tactics, it's still strategy, just not one that complies with the rules. Dempsey didn't need coke or a railroad spike to fight dirty, he fought his entire life.
The evidence for the railroad spike is very weak. As I understand it, he was within his rights to use cocaine if he chose.
How does one hide a railroad spike in handwraps or in a glove? Anyone that's had the privilege to throw bareknuckle and in a controlled environment knows how critical the formation of a proper fist is in delivering effective punches. Anyone claiming the hiding of a railroad spike doesn't have the understanding of punching mechanics - let alone the clear, unmistakable damage it would do to both glove and Willard if spike is out and if spike is in, it would certainly end Dempsey's career as it would no doubt cause irreparable damage to Dempsey's own hand. Cocaine would give him an early rounds buzz but once that adrenaline rush came off, he would've felt a big comedown I'm sure. I'm wholly convinced that despite the excesses of championship lifestyle, the Dempsey that rode the rails was the real deal as a fighter - his book tells me that he understood the science of fighting and Hajime no Ippo puts the cherry on top, senpai.
If cocaine was an effective performance enhancing drug, then the 80s would have been the best decade in the sports history.
Cocaine was an ingredient in Coke back in the 20's, sort of. It contained cocoa leaf extract, from which Cocaine is derived. And it was legal. So yeah, he may have been coked up.
If Jack drank Coca Cola Soda, he used Cocaine. Many kids in his time used whatever small amount of Cocaine was in Coca Cola then. I'm sure I ingested some, myself.
The fact that the 80s heavyweight scene was considered the poorest in decades, actually seems to indicate the opposite.
