The man who had dynamite in his hands. Another icon of the Golden Age of The Heavies is gone. RIP Earnie.

Just gutted. Great puncher, very good fighter...great guy by all accounts.

Thank you Earnie for so many great memories...even knocking out my man Ken Norton!

Another one of the icons of the golden era gone.
Apparently a very nice man outside the ring.
Earnie you may not have won a title, but you made your mark on the game never to be forgotten.
    R.I.P.

    Larry Holmes posted on twitter:

“You may have been the hardest puncher in the boxing game, but you were also my friend. Thank you for the memories. You will be greatly missed by me, my family, and the boxing community. RIP Earnie.”

I have nothing to add but thought I’d share the kind tribute from the champ.

Honestly, now that I think about it — has anyone ever had anything bad to say about Earnie? (No I’m not inviting posts trashing him if others have, but if anyone has I’ve never seen it).

Says a lot about a man.

    This is very sad news.

Shavers was an explosive and exciting fighter, who produced some amazing wins in the ring, and a gentleman of the sport.

On a more prosomal level, I lived in Liverpool in the late 90s, back when he worked as a doorman at Yates Wine Bar.

It was almost a rite of passage for students to meet him.

I've only just heard the news.

This is very sad. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy and I've always enjoyed hearing his many stories and recollections that were posted on YouTube.

    Rest in peace, Earnie.

That shot he hit Holmes with was brutal. You can see Larry’s entire body shake. He was one of the guys I’d always read about when I got into boxing. I remember being in college and there was this huge library of old Sports Illustrated magazines. I found the one with him & Ali on the cover. Didn’t get to see that fight until the internet. Sad to hear this.

That really sucks. RIP Earnie, on a life well-lived and a career well-navigated. You will be remembered long after we are all gone.
