Povetkin. Ultimately, there are levels to the sport. Ignoring all of his pro accolades, he beat everybody he fought as an amateur and won the Euro, World and Olympics. Povetkin at 41 landed a better win than Ortiz did at any age, and it wasn't his best win or even that close.
Yeah, pretty surprised at how much in favour of Povetkin in this thread. I think the point needs to be made that a far more youthful King Kong would have been an absolute nightmare for any heavyweight. Just the fact that Ortiz can still hang with todays top heavyweights says a lot because I reckon he's actually closer to 50 that the reputed 42. I would slightly favour a mid 20's Ortiz over Povetkin.
Luis Ortiz became a professional boxer at the age of 30 (almost 31), so his peak is probably in amateur boxing. Peak Povetkin would undoubtedly stop him with a knockout.
Very possibly, though some heavies don't peak until their early 30's. Reality is even this prime amateur Ortiz wasn't on Povetkin's level at the time. Ortiz wasn't even the best Cuban heavyweight at the time or the 2nd best, or even the 3rd best with Savon, Solis and Lopez Nunez all who went to the Olympics ahead of him. In 2004 when Povetkin was winning Olympic gold, Ortiz was back in Cuba having lost to Lopez Nunez. To think a possibly prime Ortiz who wasn't even top 3 in his own country could compete and beat the Olympic champion Povetkin back then is a stretch of the imagination.
