Well, Joe never liked the name. He didn't like that it caught on and said all the guys he fought were pros who tried hard and deserved more respect then being called a bum.

Never fought? Heck most don't know what it's like to even be hit let alone do something.

I think Buddy Baer was lumped in to that category too. I don't believe either men are bum s.

Some of them would almost certainly have held the title if Louis hadn't been around, so no I don't think they deserved that title.

Louis was that much better, he made the best boxers look like bums. Sometimes the "bums" held their own too, look at Billy Conn

Louis himself didn’t think so either. I can’t remember the exact quote but he said they were all good pros and he respected all of them.

There is a difference between defending your title once a month and defending it once a year.
This is compounded when you fought in an era when the top guys fought each other.
When boxing incomes were dependent upon live gates, people wanted to see good fights.
Compare that today when every fight is a mismatch from the gate and people will pay per view to debate whether fighter a has been exposed because it took him 2 rounds to knock out a guy that was stopped by fighter b last year.

Absolutely not. The Louis-Conn fight was the first outdoor feature of the year during the summer of 1941. The six fights prior to it were just out-of-town buildups to keep Joe busy and in shape prior to the two big-money outdoor fights Mike Jacobs was planning at the at the Polo Grounds during the summer featuring Conn and Nova, who were recognized as the two top contenders. The "bum of the month" fights were used to give Joe a chance to show in the lesser markets which could not draw like an outdoor fight in New York. It was easy money for Jacobs who cut himself in for 50 percent of the promoter profits in those smaller markets without risking any of his own money.

in a way it was like making sparring for the Conn match profitable, people either showed up to see Louis whoop a bum or they showed up to see an underdog take out the champ

Joe Louis fought a wide variety of both excellent and poor opponents. But they usually wound up all the same……Horizontal
