Guy only lost one fight in his first 80 (along with six obligatory Argentinian draws of course, like every other fighter from Argentina ever, haha) and retired as champion. That’s a heck of a legacy. He ruled the flyweight scene. RIP champ.
You know, I was thinking, and he's probably the must underrated fighter in history as far as English-speaking people go. You got: 1 - He's a flyweight. 2 - He was never lineal, beltholder. 3 - He was technically extremely sound but overall unspectacular 4 - He never fought in the USA or (without looking) UK. 5 - Was ducked 6 - Most footage is a bit iffy 7 - He's a flyweight. He thrashed two lineal champs, has a gorgeous resume, and should be hardcore's dream, but even upon a his death in the most hardcore of hardcore corners of the boxing internet, his death only generates a tiny handful of posts and likes. RIP to an ATG fighter whose exclusion from the hall of fame makes a mockery of that institution.
McGrain sort of covered it really. He was unspectacular, workmanlike, not an expansive physical talent or aesthetically exceptional fighter, but a really fine technician who had natural fighting instincts and was a lot more than the sum of his parts. A great 15 round fighter who could judge the pace, finish like a train and rarely wasted anything. Should've gotten his title shot sooner really. He was avoided somewhat by Burruni and spent a lot of time defending his national title evenly when he was South American champion. I get the sense reading what contemporary stuff is available that he wasn't managed the best at times. So was slowing down when he finally won the title but really squeezed a lot in at the back of his career. Burruni, Torres, Takayama and Ebihara twice is a fine list of scalps even if the Ebihara fights were razor close with Ebihara himself being on the wane, because Ebihara was a great fighter. He only really has the beating that he took from the extremely talented Tanabe as a black mark tbh, and Tanabe would likely have relieved him of the title had it not been for eye trouble ending Tanabe's career and Accavallo wisely retiring with his faculties and health in tact. It really is a crime though that this is the level of acknowledgement that he gets from the wider fanbase of the sport, he's close to being a top ten flyweight imo and is about on par with Perez and Galindez in terms of standing. Had he been around a decade later he might have benefited from the WBAs liking for South American fighters in the 70s and 80s.
RIP Champ. Never heard of this fighter until recently, will definitely check more of his fights now. Sounds like he was excellent.
