Was Jim Flynn a better fireman than Tom Sharkey was a sailor?

We know that Tom was born in Ireland and migrated to New York — obviously he must have done so by boat, and is said to have signed on as a cabin boy for the voyage — and joined the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Hawaii, another trek requiring a cruise by sea, where he began his boxing career.

Less is known, as near as I can tell, about Flynn’s exploits putting out fires. We know he put Jack Dempsey’s lights out and that he challenged for the world heavyweight title unsuccessfully a couple of times, but his careeer as a first responder is a mystery, right?

So on the available evidence I have to conclude that Sailor Tom was a better boatsman than Flynn was a fireman … but does anyone have any accounts that could bring that into dispute? Not knowing about Flynn’s firefighting career doesn’t mean he wasn’t darned good at it, of course.

And if they switched roles, what kind of sailor would Flynn make? And how would waterboy Tom be with his feet put to the fire, so to speak?

    Discuss.

I believe Flynn was a railroad fireman, which means his job was keeping fires burning rather than putting them out. I'll admit I have no idea if he was any good at it.

I dont understand. Flynn was a railroad fireman, not a firefighter.

Perhaps Flynn was inadvertently “good” at putting out fires - not actually good for a would be fire stoker and midnight toker - which is why the railroad likely had to fire him…”Ya Fiud!!”

In classic Derek Zoolander voice and style, let me answer your question with a question: “Did Flynn care enough to have a big Choo Choo Train tattooed on his chest?”

“Hmmm, well?” <lips duly pursed, part thereof the Blue Steel “Look”>

A model (no comma) idtiot? I think not.

This has opened opened up a whole new genre for discussion.

Next weeks instalment: Was Jim Corbett a better bank clerk than John L was a strong boy?

For mine, John L hands down. He lifted a detailed tram back onto its tracks after all.

As a w*nker, err..I mean banker, Corbett just lifted and pushed pens. Whoop De Doo!

But who puts it out if the train catches on fire?

“You’re the fireman, put out that fire! The train is burning up!”

“Not me, I’m not that kind of fireman. But I can throw some more coal on it if you’d like. Otherwise, take it up with my union rep.”

These guys knew how to keep the fire going on a train, even when they ran out of purpose cut lumber or coal. Very resourceful.

Jack Sharkey was the Boston Gob... a gob being a sailor to my understanding. Was he a better seaman than his namesake?

Gob also means a large amount of something — like gobs of money or whatnot.

So I think Jack was just a whole lotta man.

Or maybe he couldn’t spell Bob.

I never put much faith in boxing nicknames after realizing that the Ole Mongoose lost twice to the Cincinnati Cobra.

It also meant sailor back in the early 1900's.

Jack Sharkey didn’t have any tatts either. How could he call himself a Navy Man?

Though, at best, he might’ve had an “uppercut here” note attached to his chin for the Carnera rematch to ensure no glitches in the choreography.

Sean Connery was in the Navy. He hated it. Discharged with an ulcer (duodenal).

But even Sean got some tatts, “Mum, “Dad”’on one forearm and “Scotland Forever” on the other, or something like that.

Sean boxed a bit also and was considered quite handy. He also punched out Lana Turner’s gangster boyfriend and had to hide out for a time.

Sean also used to work for a coffin maker, so if he had boxed pro, by association, he might’ve been called “The Undertaker” - or “The Embalmer”, close enough for hand grenades.

My Dad was in the Navy but swore off tattoos. He had a mate who was similarly disposed - but one night, while on shore leave, his mate got blind drunk.

He woke up the next morning to find a tattoo on his persons that he didn’t remember getting the night before and literally bawled his eyes out.

Very similar to the movie The Hangover but I don’t believe it was as drastic as a Mike Tyson Face Tattoo in this instance…but still.. No doubt, in his inebriation, he likely succumbed to peer group pressure.

There was another boxer who was a railway fireman by trade, just can’t recall who it was - Marvin Hart maybe?

Fred Fulton was a plasterer - perhaps not up there with the heady status of being a “Fireman” but a useful trade nonetheless.

Of course Bob Fitz was a Smithy and even after his boxing career overran that trade, Bob used to make special commemorative horse shoes for his friends - imagine if someone still has one of those to this day?

What price might it fetch from Rick and his fellow Pawn Stars? Probably SFA.

I’d buy the horse shoe, if signed and accompanied by a certificate of authentication - though I doubt very much that those boxes would be ticked.
