Could Welterweight Duran (Montreal) Give Robinson His Toughest Ft?

    So welterweight SRR meets Roberto Duran, he who beat That other Sugar Ray.

    Was Welter Robinson one of the greatest things on two legs in a ring tho?
    Could the snarling, swearing, Duran put a dent in to Robinson s record?
    Would it be Ray's hardest fight at WW?

    I`d say yes but I`d put Hearns as a tougher test because of his jab, power and general reach, Robinson never faced anyone with Tommy`s right hand.

    I'm interested in it form this perspective. It's reductive but:

    Did Robinson ever fight anyone who was clearly stronger than him who had the footwork to keep up with him?

    And I think the answer would be no.

    And I think Duran would turn that answer yes. World class footwork when it gets taken away, it can leave a great fighter looking a bit shaky. Robinson weaves offence like no other but Duran is the best or second best fighter on film at turning defence to offence and his defence was great.

    I think Duran and Robinson look essentially as good as boxers have ever looked on film when fighting world class opposition. A couple might be in their class, but these two are the two maybe. It's interesting to me that Duran has a possible style advantage.

    Robinson was at his best at Welterweight, even though he is best remembered for his work as a middleweight. Duran was at his best as a lightweight, but remembered mostly for his fights against Leonard Hearns and Hagler. past his best. Robinson certainly beats Duran at 147.

    Good points and at welter Robi didn`t fight anyone as strong as Duran, but Graziano and Fullmer were stronger than Duran at 160.

    I think Duran gives Robinson a holy fit. But I see Robinson taking a close decision, Mainly due to being a natural welterweight

    And I would say Turpin is the strongest middleweight champion ever - even by today's standards.

    1) Not one of the greatest things on two legs.

    THE     greatest. Robinson is the boxing GOAT.

    2) No.

    No one beats Robinson at welterweight. Robinson would beat Duran on points quite comfortably

    3) I don't know enough about the welterweight division in the 40's to say whether the Montreal Duran would be Robinson's hardest fight in that weight class.

    But only for the first six months of his career.

    Asking how a young, up and coming lightweight in the first six months of his career would fare against a prime Duran, arguably the greatest lightweight champion ever, seems pretty pointless to me.

    It's a bit like asking if the Cassius Clay of the 1960 Olympics would beat a prime Ezzard Charles.
