This fight is why I would never pick Tyson against a handful on other ATG's. He was doing damn good and when Holyfield wouldn't roll over, like certain other ATG's would not have, Tyson just gave up. It was the Tillis/Green gameplan with more offense. Tyson quit.
I think this fight showed just how tough mentally and physically Evander was. He took some bone crushing punches from one of the best power punching HW's of all time and never wavered. I'd put a prime Holy in against any past or present champion and give him a decent chance to beat any of them.
the tyson of the 80's was a different animal to the 'bully' of the 90's there is a big difference between a dedicated boxer and a boxer who only turns up for the pay days
Except for a primed Ali. I would take a primed Evander over a primed Tyson any day. It was close in the first Tyson Holy fight because Tyson blew his laod while Holyfield fought like it was going to be a long fight. Tyson never finished a war in his entire career and it would have always been a war against Holy. Tyson didn't hsve the heart or chin to finish this kind of fight and he never did.
It was fairly close over the first 5 rounds but I still had Holyfield leading...say 3-2, maybe 3-1-1 if you're feeling generous. But Tyson really fell to bits from the 6th onwards, I don't think he won a single round from then on. Although ironically he was actually having a better 10th, until those hard counters got through from Holyfield.
Tyson had a fantastic chin, also watch his fights with Razor Ruddock (especially the second) if you want to see him in a war.
Tyson was seeing a steroid guru at this time too, so cancel that point out I had Tyson winning the first 5 and he did hurt Holy at 1 stage (was it 3 uppercuts?) but Tysons style and pace is that of a front runner, the human body can't perform that fighting style at a high pace for 12-15 rounds
