Rocky Marciano would get off the mat to stop reigning champ Jersey Joe Walcott and become the heavyweight champion of the world. This content is protected
This fight is one that win or lose both fighters or victors. Walcott won for being so game and competitive against a young whirlwind pressure fighter and ATG prime Marciano. He floor Rocky twice, the first and second time he had ever touched the canvas in his career. 13 rounds with a prime Marciano who is motivated by his first title shot is a beast to be contended with. Marciano won for beating a highly skilled and seasoned veteran. His chin and endurance were tested twice with two tremendous knockdowns that he came back from. His 13th round knockout of Walcott is legendary and Walcott had an elite chin by all means. I see both men won this fight, Walcott was in his twilight years, Rocky beat an ATG in both their respective primes.
70 years already! I can remember when this fight was only a long time before I was born, now it’s that much older again… Kidding, thanks for the heads up on the anniversary. I like those old BW TV telecasts, particularly Walcott vs Marciano. All the authentic attributes of a real fight going down translate very well imo - viz you can really “feel” the punches, fatigue etc. yourself. That final right hand though…in real time, I would’ve been seriously concerned for Jersey Joe’s health. Fortunately it remained just an all time classic KO without permanent injury or fatality involved.
On you for remembering. Marciano was tough I watch the fight for a bit of a kick, once and a while when I’m feeling like I can’t get up from life’s stinger right hand. Also keeps you humble seeing guys like that fight so brutally you remember where you are and it lights a fire inside. Wholly buckets though was Walcott a black Jack player lot of risky business in this one.
