Would Calzaghe have had Benn s number at Supermiddle?. But what about even the ageing Benn, from the McClellan fight? What sort of fight would that turn out to be.?. Much as I love Nigel, I don't see him beating Calzaghe. Thoughts?
100% depends if Calzaghe can hold Benn’s punch. He certainly has the size too. Because he is going to be hit hard, again and again.
Calzaghe a strong favourite for me. Speed, movement, angles and volumes of punches would mean Benn would continually have to reset. I think he would be out worked to a clear UD. He'd obviously have a punchers chance, but not as strong imo as I suspect in the opinion of most others. As a naturally relatively small MW, Benn was a big puncher at 168, rather than the massive puncher he was at 160. I'm 99% certain I recall Benn saying Calzaghe would have beaten Eubank, Watson, Collins and he. Whilst I often take fighters predictions at fantasy fights involving themselves with a pinch of salt, as they usually have an agenda, even if it is just to come across as humble, in this instance Benn strikes me as the kind of straight talking bloke who was probably just speaking his mind.
I’d take Calzaghe here. I think he’d outmanoeuvre Nigel with his movement and skill set. If Benn could draw Calzaghe into some vicious exchanges which Joe was sometimes prone to do then that would increase Benn’s chances. Calzaghe’s freakishly high output though would see him to a hard fought UD or late stoppage with a battered Benn being stopped on his feet.
Joe Calzaghe fully fit without injuries out works Nigel Benn. Calzghe's handspeed and movement would bamboozle Benn. I think Benn may land a few punches likely to rock Calzaghe but Calzaghe has typically better stamina to out point Benn. I don't see this fight concluding with a KO or TKO. More likely Calzaghe plays it safe to get a unanimous points decision.
That's how I feel about it too, Cecil. As strong as Benn is, there's certain styles he's gonna struggle against. The only chance he has, if Joe gets over confident and a bit cocky. Doesn't take long for Benn to hurt someone.
Yeah,Calzaghe was the more skilled and I see him boxing his way to victory over the distance by a pretty clear margin. Nigel would definitely have a puncher's chance though.
Benn was much better at 168 than at 160, and yet I do not think he has much hope at beating Calzaghe at 168. But both as relative novice 160lbers... I think Benn could do it! [EDIT] I would have put a fair wedge on Joe Starting at Middle, but looking at it, if anything he moved down to 168; memories can be a ******* sometimes! So thus I do not foresee any fair example where I would pick Benn over Calzaghe.
Calzaghe never fought anyone who hit as hard as Benn, and Calzaghe could be hit by an awful lot of right hands like vs Reid, Woodhall, etc. Calzaghe is probably the favourite overall but I wouldn't pick him confidently, it all depends how well Calzaghe can take Benn's power and how often Benn can find him.
Would have been an interesting fight imo. Benn coming forward looking to land those bombs whilst Joe throwing fast shots from all angles.
