Yep. They're being bully boys. Blaming the BBBofC, who are a disgrace, let's be honest. They should have rules in place that allow them to not sanction an event if the fighter fails a drug test. At the moment, Conor Benn could have passed all UKAD tests but failed 50 VADA tests but they'd have no leg to stand on with regards to not sanctioning the fight. They have to sanction it. That's why Eddie knew if he got lawyered up the fight would go ahead. That's why he was so cocky yesterday but he seen the backlash and rightfully cancelled. No one should be allowed to earn from this event. Benn should be made to pay all of the undercard, out of his own packet. The little toerag.
It's a long time since I read it but I think the take was that UKAD were all for calling their bluff, but they were overruled by the treasury mandarins who don't give a monkeys about sport and didn't see the point in taking a risk, however small. That's when the compromise was stitched together. I think Tyson was a lucky boy, but he's by far the only one in this sport.
I have to say I'm quite enjoying the absolute mauling that Conor Benn is rightfully receiving right now, his whole career completely unravelling. It's been one big lie.
Maybe I'm overthinking how this all plays out, but... Hearn Sr has talked a few times about Matchroom replicating UFC and having its own global promotion in charge of contracts and titles and so on. If they sued the BBBoC into oblivion, this would be one way of Matchroom becoming its own governor...
Yeah, at that time the Treasury weren’t responsible for covering liability from litigation (though think it has changed now). So I imagine they asked them to and they said no. As UKAD’s budget will show, it’s not high on their priority list (arguably rightfully so with the other things the country needs to spend money on).
