Terry Downes Chris Eubank Nigel Benn Carl Froch Joe Calzaghe Michael Watson Some excellent fights in the offing. I envisage Turpin winning the lot but all bouts would be competitive.
Turpin would ko Downes with a lot of blood flowing. I think he would outbox Benn, Eubank and Watson. I'm not so sure about Froch and Calzaghe. Calzaghe is one of the UK's greatest ever. If we're talking about at 160lbs then it would favour the Licker
I agree about Calzaghe. The closest he came to defeat was against Bernard Hopkins. One of Britain's all time greats,as was Randy.
Yep I'm with you fellas. Joe Calzaghe is definitely the man to beat. He was a bit of everything really, he could fight and box and adapt to most styles. Saying that, Im not gonna underestimate Randy. This is a guy that beat the one and only SRR, what a win to have on the old cv.!
If you watch the fight without the BBC commentary done by a chinless wonder who'd been told to expect a gallant British defeat the fight was a rout by RAT. I've listened to an American commentator giving his opinions and analysis and he was under no illusion Turpin had bested Robinson everywhere. The great Sugar Ray may have had a good time touring Europe and been neglecting his training but he was a hard, courageous, beautiful boxer at the end of the day and deserved his P4P title. 'In palace, pub and parlour the whole of England held its breath' July 10th 1951
I've never really gone for that, Sugar had spent the time on the lash and took him lightly. I think Ray was totally surprised by his strength as well and Turpin s lack of fear. He was there to win.
Definitely. Robinson liked to party, dance and the ladies, but he didn't drink. Turpin was up for the fight and it had parallels with Frazier-Ali 1971. Turpin was never quite the same again while Robbie, on the slide, fought for another 14 years, and against top ranked fighters. As Reg Gutteridge said "Randy held him in his brawny arms like a baby"
It is a shame how things unfolded for Turpin. To become world champion, beating one of the greatest fighters ever, then bit by bit over the years lose so much. Gets that bad he commits suicide. Very sad, mate.
I think the Randy of his short prime is a fight for anyone. He was immensely strong, had good fundamentals and could bang
The Licker would be too busy for Eubank. Eubank never fought for the full 3 minutes of the round which would be a problem as Randy did. There had never been a boxer like the Licker in British boxing. He was built like a sculpted Greek God but he was also exceptionally fit even for a fighter, enjoyed training, was a beautiful boxer and could bang with punches thrown from either flank. His ko of Luc Van Dam for the European title lasted 48 seconds including the count with one of the most brutal overhand rights ever seen. He hit Pete Mead in the floating rib the American contender fainted and the fight was stopped. His fight with Cyrile Dellanoit was stopped when it looked like the tough Belgian's eye was going to roll out of it's socket. Afterwards in the changing room the youngest Turpin looked sick as the doctor manoeuvred Dellanoits eye back into place. "Never mind"said the Belgian "It could be you and your eye" Randy had gone green by then.
The best person he beat was better then all of them when he beat him so I think it’s reasonable to believe Turpin could beat them all on their best night.
I would be interested to see Michael Watson Vs Randolph Turpin both big boys for their weight. Watson was pretty solid with a decent boxing skill set I think that would be a highly competitive bout just watch out for Turpin's swerving hook.
