What Other Eras Could Ezzard Charles Do well At Heavyweight?

    We know that Charles was a Great Lightheavy, who hit the Heavyweight s and reigned for a while with 8 defences . With win s over Joe Louis and Walcott, respectable reign.

    So which other moments in time could Ezzard pick up the title at Heavyweight and prove himself?

    Ezzard would have had a very good shot had he been ten years younger and came to prominence after Rocky Marciano hung them up. He and Floyd Patterson would have had a series of bouts with Ezzard,in my view,winning the majority of them.

    I' don't recall it ever being done but Ezzard in the 20's against Dempsey and Tunney would be some interesting fights. He would have taken Jimmy Braddock to school and I believe a younger Charles beats Marciano. He'd also have done very well against the Floyd Patterson and Ingo era. Though Sonny Liston could be a bridge to far. I think the 70's would have been asking too much of Charles though but he'd have been a viable contender with a few good wins

    Often thought that myself, Stevie. If he'd come around at the same time as Patterson.
    Could have made for a good little series of fights.

    That's a brilliant fantasy fight, Ezzard verses Dempsey.
    I'd definitely give Charles a shout at winning against Jack.
    He'd have to soak up some hard power shots but we know he can do that.

    Certainly any time before his actual reign. Certainly a younger version of Ezz could have taken Marciano. Afterward, it gets very dicey quickly. He would have "done well" up to the 80's but at that point his hopes fade. At least there would be a cruiser division to conquer.

    This. Ezzard had the ability to compete and possibly be champion in any heavyweight era.

    Had he consciously bulked to HW in his prime years and wanted to rumble I think he’d take out a lot of unintelligent sorts of fighters way out of his weight class. Special, special fighter. Liston would be easy money in my opinion.

    I think he's underrated in that department. And frankly, at heavyweight, Ezz was a little overrated in the same. There are times he just brawls. Maybe it was age or it was frustration facing stronger opponents but there are times, on film, that he just flails.

    I am going to go with any.

    If anybody is going to close the gap, and it has been close repeatedly, then it is this man.

    The worst that he would do in any era, if he chose to campaign at heavyweight, is top five.

    That is a conservative position.
