Topic of the minute - Ali vs Shavers 15th round.....you score it!!!!

I don't hate Ali or Shavers one bit, I hate how people overrate them or certain attributes of theirs, which is not the same thing.
In many ways, Ali has been incredibly good for the sport, but at the same time his popularity makes most people to overrate him badly.

 

I only partially agree.

I think Shavers was definitely busier and threw more than Ali in the first half, but his accuracy was often lacking. Even when he did land, sometimes Ali rolled with the punches (and for some reason few people in this thread seem to notice or refuse to). I gave Shavers credit for several body shots that had almost no weight on them and also counted punches that were only glancing blows, and yet Ali's connect percentage is still better.

Scoring a round isn't just based on how busy you are, it's whose controlling the action. Defense is also a factor that few people in this thread have considered. You can't just ignore the fact Ali blocked or parried several of Shavers punches without factoring that into the scoring. For example, there was a moment when Ali was against the ropes and Shavers threw a very impressive hook to the body followed by an uppercut reminiscent of a prime Tyson. The problem was, Ali blocked both. There were also 6 or 7 wild hayemakers Shavers threw that completely missed Ali. If I'm scoring a round, I can excuse 1 or 2 sloppy punches, but not half a dozen. I mean, has anyone in this thread scored a Mayweather or Whitaker fight? You can certainly win a round based on the fact your opponent couldn't land a clean shot and was ineffective in their aggression.

So without rambling any further, I'll sum it up with this: sure, Im open minded enough to see why some people think the first half of the round can go to Shavers. He was busier and Ali didn't throw a lot. However, when scoring the entirety of the round, I have to lean towards Ali because A) Ali was way more accurate (He landed at least 75% of his punches which is pretty impressive for a 15th round) B) Ali had better defense (either by blocking or slipping several punches) C) Ali rocked Shavers and dominated the end of the round. The only advantages I can give Shavers is that he threw more and was busier and that is simply not enough to win a round given the 3 aforementioned advantages Ali had.

 

No, we just know the difference between being aggressive and throwing a lot, vs ineffective aggression and failing a to land a lot. Shavers landed maybe 4 solid blows and missed quite a few of his punches.

 

LOL yeah he missed lots of his punches, which obviously means that the bazooka shots that he snapped Ali's head back with and made reel all over the ring, didn't count, right? You strike me as a style over substance kinda guy.

 

I remember this one fight I had as a kid where I swung my arms around like a spaz for thirty seconds hitting nothing and then landed a shot that dumped the other guy like a sack of potatoes. His whole left face swelled up like a balloon. I always thought I'd won that one but I guess I was wrong.

 

At least half the people in this thread who voted for Shavers, haven't even watched the fight judging by their comments.

 

Well, I had this one kid in primary school actually stick and move on me, landing flashing punches that I simply had no defence against.

When I tried to return fire he deftly moved out of range and I was left swinging at air.

All the other kids watching were laughing at me. “He swings like a girl” I heard one of them yell out. God, the humiliation.

I was determined though. I began taking huge, wide steps forward and eventually cut the playground off on this little Ali wannabe - finally cornered, with nowhere to run. - I then gave that kid an absolute hiding.

If he doesn’t want more of the same next week he better not call me mean names from behind the school fence again while I’m waiting to catch my bus to go to work.

You can't win a round just from a few solid punches when the rest of the round you threw sloppily missing by a mile, had your punches blocked, got countered multiple times, and ended the round being battered against the ropes. Show me when that has ever happened in the history of boxing.

Ali snapped Shavers head multiple times as well. You didn't watch the fight.

Some of these punches connected, but they didn't have much on them. It matters, but it's not something significant.

True, though Shavers punch was certainly cleaner and more powerful, Ali landed on the back of the head.

Yeah, this one-two combo clearly landed and rocked Ali. About thisweird long right - it's normal for Shavers, he's a very crude fighter.

Nice uppercut by Ali, but Shavers also connected with that right counter.

By far the best punch of the round up to this point.

We agree that Ali dominated the last 20 seconds, so it's not needed to break down them.

Again, this is where we disagree. Shavers was very sloppy and predictable, but he landed quite a few solid punches, while all Ali did on offense is one solid uppercut. You say that Shavers mostly landed glancing blows, but almost all of Ali punches were like that before the last 20 seconds. I don't see him countering Shavers that much, outside of a few jabs here and there. No, I disagree that Ali dominated in terms of "defense, ring generalship, technique, etc.", Ali didn't look good until the last flurry. His workrate is horrible, he's in the ring with an exhausted crude brawler who still landed on him and he had no legs at this point. Calling that a domination is completely wrong.

 

He got outboxed 1/3 of the round and was nearly stopped in the last third.
