Impressive career for an ex-circus strongman who didn't enjoy fighting and started at an age where other fighters of the era were already past prime.

 

Regardless of the inevitable squabbling, that's a tremendous picture.

 

Is this the photo the night of the Baer vs. Carnera match? 6-14-1934?

For a laugh, you should read the press clippings when they asked Dempsey, Jeffries and Johnson who do you think will win.

Johnson could not stop laughing.

Jeffries just shrugs his shoulder and said something like I wish they were around in my day.

I forget Dempsey response, but all three felt neither Baer or Carnera was very good.

 

The picture looks like Jeffries was going to say something to Carnera

No its a publicity still from the film The Prize Fighter & The Lady, Carnera played the Champion, Baer played Steve Morgan the challenger and the love interest was Myrna Loy I believe.
The script called for Baer to defeat Carnera, but Primo wouldn't agree so a draw was the compromise.
The man in the middle is the director Woody Van Dyke.
Baer wore that robe into the ring when he challenged Carnera for real.

 

Dempsey by far still looks toughest of the bunch

 

He was the referee in the film.

Baer was great in that movie...really showed some acting chops. Myrna Loy was super hot.

It's such a great photo...

 

It is a great photo - back then, its own mix of old and new.

I know Jeffries height was inflated a bit back in the day - mostly listed as 6’2” and sometimes 6’2 1/2”.

Based on the eye test, while noting Jeffries height can curiously differ from one photo to another, I would say he was 6’1”.

The angle, distance and Jeff’s leans isn’t doing him any favours in this particular group photo.

There are several other photos in which Jeffries appears taller than Dempsey by about 1” and of course Jeff’s lack of hair has to be taken into account compared to Dempsey’s thatch.

Suffice to say, I don’t think Dempsey was 6’1”, probably more like an even 6’ or a touch over.
