Who did you think won after the first time you saw the controversial classic?

I didn't score it, just watched it, years after it occured and thought SRL won clearly. Most recently, on my 4th or 5th view actually scoring, I had it a draw.

Has anyone else experienced this? I don't know it its because of the broadcasters or just how ray outperformed expectations. Maybe I've just gotten better (or worse) at scoring rights.

It also occured to me that as my boxing knowledge (and respect for Hagler) has increased, I'm possibly being more sympathetic to Hagler.

Follow up: How, if at all, has your assessment of this fight changed over the years?

The thing that stands out to me from the fight is Sugar made Marvin back up on a couple of occasions. Sugar's detractors never mention that.

Leonard snapped Haglers's head multiple times during that fight.
He couldn't hurt him, though he was trying too. But
    he did keep Hagler honest.

First time watching, I thought the right guy got the decision. Leonard just moved and stayed out of range, then would throw a couple flurries here and there to steal rounds. Never did actually score this, but my initial thought was that Leonard fought a smart fight in this one and stole a lot of rounds..

It would be best if folks familiarized themselves with the criteria for judging a boxing match. They are effective aggression, clean punching, defense, and ring generalship.

I thought Leonard won it fairly comfortably, and couldn't understand why everyone thought it was so controversial. But rewatching it again a few times I thought it was a draw.

The fight itself was pretty mediocre, but it has to be the most polarizing and notable fight of all time as far as scoring. You could write a doctoral dissertation about the psychology of scoring and public opinion based on this fight.

Thought Leonard won it the first time when I saw it live (on closed circuit) and have continued to score it for him every time.

Same. I love Hagler definitely over Leonard too but I always admit he should've pressed the issue more. I understand the saying, "Ya gotta really take the belt from the champion!" but Hagler looked lackadaisical imho too. Champ or not SRL was still the darling pretty boy so u can't assume the judges will b 4 u just cause ur the champ.

    I had Hagler.

Having tipped Leonard to win - even making bets with several friends on the result - I became quite ready to lose my money, while watching the fight.

    The cards surprised me.

First time was when it was live, Closed Circuit, I thought Ray nipped it.
