I think you're missing the subtlties of boxing semantics. What we saw in Cotto/Margarito was one of those occasions when a great boxer lost to a great fighter. Cotto is the technically superior boxer. Tony is the relentless fighter who beat him.
No I understand it. I feel Cotto fought the wrong fight which lost him the fight. IF Margos plan was to tire him out by letting Cotto hit him cleanly a bunch of times, then congrats to margo.
Eze, don't downplay what Margarito did apart from take every punch Cotto threw. He busted Cotto up badly!
By saying that Cotto fought the wrong fight takes Margarito's acheivement out of the equation. I'm not sure Cotto could have fought any fight and won last night. It wasn't just Margarito's heart and chin that won. It was his tireless workrate, his determination to go to the body, his swarming, smothering attack and his relentless pressure that made Cotto unable to breathe. Boxing isn't just about speed, technical skills and flashy shots. Margarito proved that on Saturday.
margo is the better fighter. he proved it in the ring and no number of excuses from any hater can change that. as someone pointed out, he may not be a better boxer but he is the better fighter at 147. if boxing were a dance cotto would win every time but since it involves a little bit of fighting, guys like margo have a chance.
I guess if thats how you want to put it. I dont mean downplay Margos victory. I was amazed he walked through so many shots and continued to come forward. But I was very dissapointed Cotto had no body attack.
In science, when results don't match expectations, you change your expectations, because the results are the results.
yea but in science you also have to do multiple experiments or else the results might be skewed due to error deviation from the mean.
Still, eze, wants to call Cotto the better boxer/fighter regardless of the results. I think the results have to stand at the moment. Not like there is much question about the results in this one.
I hope you realize Margo's will over came Cotto's skill. It sounds like your down playing Margo's win. He out worked Cotto and punished his body with thudding shots all night long.
I do in one respect. Cotto seemed to be the 'cleaner boxer', but in a fight, there is more to consider. Kelly Pavlik is the home town boy so I hear the same criticisms of him over and over, yet he keeps winning even though he is an 'inferior boxer' according to many on this board.
That's what I am saying. Cotto's skill > Margos. But Margos will, heart and determination won him that fight. I give Margo 150% credit for the win. He punished Cotto into submission.
