Fight City included Weaver vs. Tate and Coetzee, Cobb vs. Shavers, Holmes vs. Cooney and Witherspoon, and Tyson vs. Bruno in their 80s list. Here' s mine:

    1980
    Mercado vs. Shavers-both men down
    Cooney vs. Young
    Norton vs. Cobb
    1981
    Holmes vs. Berbick
    Shavers vs. Sims-both men down
    1982
    Snipes vs. Berbick
    1983
    Weaver vs. Dokes II
    Coetzee vs. Thomas
    Coetzee vs. Dokes
    Bruno vs. Cummings
    1984
    Thomas vs. Witherspoon
    1985
    Holmes vs. Williams
Williams vs. Ferguson-both men down twice
    Thomas vs. Weaver
    1986
    Berbick vs. Thomas
    Tyson vs. Gross-great 1-round fight
Weaver vs. Williams-great comeback from Weaver
    Biggs vs. Snipes
    1987
    couldn't come up with anything
    1988
Snipes vs. Lionel Washington-underrated, unique brawl
    1989
    Holyfield vs. Stewart I
    Ruddock vs. Smith-both men down

I haven't seen all the big-name 80s matchups, but I thought these were the best ones that Fight City didn't cover. I'm not saying they were the best fights of the 80s, just in the heavyweight division. I tried to put some obscure but epic ones on here. Does anyone think this a good list? Is it missing any others?

@Saintpat - went looking for a thread on this after my comment in the scorecard thread and found this one by @William Walker. Lo and behold, Holyfield-Dokes isn’t listed! It should be, of course. But some nice choices in there from Will.

Again, though, not sure there was a better one than Holyfield-Dokes in the 80s.

@William Walker - I’d add Holyfield-Dokes to 1989 as just mentioned. Holmes-Witherspoon from 1983 is also worthy of being listed as it was a very close, competitive fight with an amazing round 9. I see you already referenced it from the Fight City article, though.

Page--Coetzee was one of the best bouts of the decade.

Witherspoon and Bruno swapping right hands in their title go in 1986.
Bruno, the epitome of the gallant British loser possessed the bigger punch but not the better punch resistance.
    The underrated Witherspoon won

Sweet. I’d throw Holmes-Cooney into the mix as well.

Yeah, I was making a list of ones not mentioned by another website. Holyfield-Dokes, great fight, did get mentioned there.

    Tyrell Biggs vs. David Bey
    Orlin Norris vs. Renaldo Snipes
    Leland Hardy vs. Ike Padilla

Hardy-Padilla was a fight between a couple of novices. Great Fight though.

Love to see Weaver listed so frequently, Weaver showed a dominance and resilience in a weaker era, but he gave us some of the greatest fights.

I agree it was boring. But it was for the title, it was not a knockout like with Berbick and a huge majority. There were no gifts; Mike Tyson deservedly won on points.
IMO Tony Tucker hinted that Mike Tyson is still vulnerable, which wasn't seen so well then, but is now.

    Nice list

    For 1987 I'd say Tyson/Tucker

It was more competitive than anticipated and Tucker landed some good shots while absorbing Tyson's power

Another memorable but one sided fight was Spinks/Cooney. It was thought it would be competitive but Spinks beat the crap out of Cooney. It was exciting if you liked seeing Gerry's head snap back again and again but I kind of felt sorry for him. It was the first PPV I ever ordered.
