Carlos Monzon was an immovable stone of a fighter and he just worked. Mentally unshakable, remarkable composure and IQ.
I think that was because of his reach and that on the inside Robi would land combo`s of hooks to the body, it would have been action packed.
I think SRR was the greatest fighter ever P4P, but I've always believed that Monzon had the height, reach, awkwardness, strength and general ring IQ qualities to successfully deal with Robbie over 15 rounds. I don't expect our home grown gaggle of noobies to agree, but interestingly enough, in a magazine article years ago, he said the basic same thing.
That's more or less what I've always thought. At 150-154lbs Robinson is untouchable but at 160 both Monzon and Hagler would've beaten him. I believe Sugar Ray Leonard would have taken him all the way at 147 or 154lbs but it's only my opinion
Exactly. He was a rock, mentally and physically. He wasn't a "fold up" fighter. Tremendous composure and he wouldn't be floundering around the ring out of gas late in a fight (or even early), like you see so many do. Makes me think of when Kelly Pavlik fought Jermain Taylor, they were both gassed and hanging on, even early in the fight. You would have never seen Monzon like that....
And Carlos Monzon was a pack a day smoker on top of that and a party animal, going out with very attractive women, yet he was always in shape. Throughout any fight he was cool and very composed, he seemed to have the answers against any style, Amilcar Brusa, his lifelong trainer had 14 champions to his list of fighters that he trained. Carlos Monzon proved his greatness through 14 title defenses, he held the title from Nov 7 1970 until his retirement as champion on August 29 1977 approximately one month after his unanimous decision victory over no.1 challenger Rodrigo Valdes of Colombia. Carlos was financially set to ever come back, no one has ever retired as champion since Monzon did it. To Monzon, boxing was a business, he did not go ranting and raving like a maniac to attract attention to his career, again he was cool, calm and collected inside and out of the ring. He was impervious to braggarts and intimidating looking opponents such as legendary Bennie Briscoe. Monzon drew with Briscoe in May 1967, but then gave him a title bout on Nov 11 1972, Monzon rocked in round 9 weathered the storm to box his way to a unanimous 15 round decision. That bout can be seen on You Tube.
Yes I watched that fight with Briscoe and he did get rocked, but he took it well and recovered quick. Same when he went down against Valdez. He was a complete fighter that knew how to adjust and was totally relaxed. I never understood how he could smoke cigarettes!
Monzon was a robot. Prime (the one there is no footage of) SRR schools Monzon the 'Mummy'. Pretty sure George Foreman copied Monzons style. Ali explained it best.. This content is protected
If one of the fights takes place in Argentina, it’s a draw. They fill out the scorecards when the contracts are signed and mail them to the commission.
says who? thats not the case at all .. reach, measuring the distance, weight, strength, probably stamina or equal .. goes to Monzon
Agreed - and Monzon's strength at the weight cannot be underestimated. I think Robinson would have found Monzon extremely difficult to beat (and vice versa). Great fight.
Geez!, this doesn't seem right , picking someone to beat Sugar Ray Robinson. But I think Monzon was an incredible middleweight and might get the win. Of course there's no such thing as certainty in a match like this.
I've always hated smoking and thought it goes against every law in a sport like boxing where stamina is all important. Then you get an ATG like him who throws it in my face
