I recently learned about him. It seems many people have him at #1 at middleweight. But where does he rank P4P in history?

He never beat a great fighter at their best. Napoles, Benvenuti and Griffith were not at their best when they fought him. They were washed up, and Napoles was better at WW. Valdez never beat a great fighter so far as I can recall. He doesn't scratch by top 20 P4P, not close.

Definitely in the top 30 pushing wouldn't go as far as top 20 though.

Hard to name forty fighters who are greater, that's for sure.

Carlos Monzon, 89-3-9, 61 KO's, World Middleweight Champion from Nov 7 1970 until his retirement on August 29 1977, 14 successful title defenses. Was unbeaten in his last 82 fights dating back to October 9 1964, a decision loss to countryman Alberto Massi, in a career that began on Feb 8 1963. Carlos avenged his three decision defeats, he avenged his defeats by defeating eight of the 9 men he drew with. Another poster stated that the opponents that he fought were not at their best, not true. A fighter can only fight the fighters that are put in front of them, not fighters from the future or past. Calling out fighters is something from WWE or a clown show. No other middleweight champion ever retired as World Middleweight Champion or had 14 successful title defenses, the last champion with 13 title defenses lost his title to a come backing fighter.

Not very high, just like Hagler he never moved up. Middleweight is a different story though

A great fighter knows his own limitations, Carlos Monzon had no desire to move up, boxing was a business to him. Besides Carlos Monzon, who was the other World Middleweight Champion to retire undefeated? Hagler didn't, he lost to a fighter that had not fought in a few years. Nobody has to move up to be considered a great fighter, those comments belong on the General Forum, this is Classic, they are coming from youngsters.

Neither did Hagler, he just whined after losing his title to an opponent that had not fought in a few years. These fighter of today could not carry Carlos Monzon's jockstrap.

I think moving up in weight to beat a weak belt holder, doesn't always mean your a greater than the fighter who dominates one division. I mean look at Broner isn't he a 3 weight division champion technically ? Does anyone think hes greater than Monzon ?

Also remember in Monzon's era there was no Super Middleweight division, so he would of had to move up and fight someone like Bob Foster at Light Heavyweight. Would any Middleweight now move up and fight the murderous punching Bob Foster ? Just like Hagler would of had to move up and fight Michael Spinks, would any Middleweight now fight Michael Spinks ? So I don't always agree with that argument.
