Why did Cotto quit and Jeff Lacy didn't?

This is true. By the mid rounds you knew that Lacy wasn't going to suddenly deliver a bomb, there wasnt even a chance of it KO'ing Joe anyway who has a good chin. I think they let him carry on though as Joe isn't a heavy hitter. But still irresponsible.

I was watching a McClellan/Benn documentary the other day. McClellan's corner people should have been punished for their inability to pull Gerald out of there when he was blinking and ****. They have to live with it though too. Gerald had too much heart/pride and it cost him his health.

Cotto was being hit and was knocked down fair and square, he took some shots before the first knockdown and just had to take a knee simply because he was dead tired to even protect his self or keep his hands up. Then the second knockdown followed in similar fashion. Cotto didn't quit.

Jeff Lacy was basically a punching bag in there for Calzaghe and the fight being stopped in the 7th would've been way better. But they allowed it to continue and now Lacy is nothing similar to what he once was just to make idiots like you say "He didn't quit".

what ever way you spin it, cotto did quit. there's no shame in that, he didn't want anymore punishment and took a second knee waiting for it to be stopped. that is clear, but it doesn't take anything away from cotto. just like it didn't take anything away from koysta. these fighters know there own limits.

i agree with what you say except about cotto not quitting. a fighter knows if he takes 2 knees and with his body language, the ref will stop it or the corner will throw in the towel.

Lacy was too stupid to quit - as a result he has pretty much wrecked his career. Meanwhile Cotto will come back to near the level he was once at.

Calzaghe jabbed and punched from the floor with a lot of handspeed, coordination and accuracy but it was more of a case of accumulation and the fact that Lacy couldn't find a way to breakthrough with the necessary timing and technique... Lacy was only in trouble of not going the distance in the last 3 minutes really and Joe was always aware of Lacy's power ( actually that was the reason he was throwing so much).
Margarito was hurting Cotto really bad with each and every shot to the point of Miguel very wisely taking a knee. Lacy ate a lot of punches and was utterly outclassed but he never needed to take a break like Miguel needed. Actually it was more of Calzaghe holding Jeff's left hand most of the clinches and breaks.

Lacy is a serious warrior. He got beaten up and injured up v Joe. Fought with a hurt arm v Tsypko. The man really is good for boxing. I like him.

P4P Margorito is a much bigger puncher than Cotto.

saying, the myth of cotto the beat is dead, same is juan diaz.

    1) Cotto's corner was smart. Lacy's wasn't.

    2) Calzaghe's hands were actually getting sore and hurt from landing too much in the first half of the fight- after he hit hard enough to get Lacy's attention in the early going, doing actual KO caliber damage wasn't the point.

    3) Margo was putting more on his shots than Calzaghe did. Nothing was stopping him from throwing harder in the later rounds as he was in the beginning.

    4) One was a close fight, the other a blowout. One allows you to ease off the throttle and gives you the choice to coast a little bit because the urgency isn't there for the KO. The other doesn't. I think Calzaghe by the end of it was wondering why they didn't pull Lacy out as much as we were. Whereas Margo still wasn't sure of the outcome and wanted to take it out of the judges' hands to avoid possibly being screwed.

    Take your pick. :!:

He just had nothing left and was taking damage before being dropped, serious damage that is. Let's face it, the guy got his nose busted pretty bad early and was fighting with his mouth open breathing from there and taking serious damage in the process, got his eye cut as well and kept trying till there was nothing left. The first knockdown was from clean shots, he gets up takes some punches till he's driven to the other corner and just goes down again simply because he had nothing left to offer. That's not quitting, that's being stopped/knocked out. If he quit in the corner and didn't come out for the 12th then sure, he quit but that wasn't what happened. He didn't say "No" to the referee when asked if he wanted to continue following the first knockdown either so this "quit" bull**** is just coming straight out of your ass with 0 proof behind it. The man was taking serious damage and his body couldn't handle it anymore, which is why he was dropped the first time anyway.
