Moore was still kind of slick in this fight

You are correct Pugguy, Ali predicted round 8, then cut it in half after Archie invented the Lip Buttoner.

I corrected someone already & said Moore was rfeally within one month of 49 when he fought Ali (& had one more fight & victory months later)-but although aware of the vagueries of his Birthday, I thought it the 1913 birthdate was well established.
According to this unverified source, December 13th is, but a census on 1/2/20 seemed to show he was 3 years & 2 months then.
I am skeptical; for one IF the year is correct but the undispited 12/13 date is also, he would have been less than a month over 3.

However if this source is correct, Moore was just shy of 46, not almost 49, when he fought Clay/Ali.
But if so, his professional career would have started at 18.

I guess the original rhyming word for the forecast of 8 was likely “great” (as in maybe: I am so great…)?

“Much to his dismay, my lip buttoner will silence young Mr Clay. And when Cassius is muted, I will proceed to punch him stupid. In the allotted round of 7, you will see him kiss the resin and he’ll be thankful I didn’t send him to Heaven”.

If only Arch had me around to write for him…..Ali might’ve been even less merciful than he was…lol.

Yep…my mistake. That was simply my maths letting me down. I checked his date of birth online that said 1913 and the date of the fight with Clay…towards the end of 1962… before my post. Then I contrived to mess up the count…not unlike a few boxing referees over the years!!

I just read the piece you sent. Interesting about the confusion in his age. Archie himself saying he was born three years after his mother claimed!

I have to say I’d take his mothers testimony over Archie’s. Yes they were both present but I suspect his ma’s memory of the birth would be slightly more reliable!!

Moore was born on Dec. 13th 1913,, which means he was 4 weeks shy of his 49th birthday, in the ring with a young Cassius Clay. The odds must have been a 1,000 to 1 .

Even at his peak that would be too high, although I know you are not being literal.
I could see odds of 50-1 or so though...
This was no normal "old man".
His record in the months & several years before the fight & the competition he faced was at least nearly as good as throughout his whole career!
Even as he moved up to HW for fights.

This fight seems a bit of a joke now, but at the time it was considered a major test for a fairly green 20 year old prospect. Clay was the favourite, but only by about 2-1. It's not hard to find people who were picking Moore to win.

And Muhammad Ali was just a young 20 year old, he was born on Jan 17 1942.

It is kind of like the mystery surrounding Sonny Liston's date of birth.

Agreed. He would have been lucky to have a guy like you write for him.
